Among the twelve branches there are four Three Harmony combinations, 三合 (sān hé): 申子辰, 寅午戌, 亥卯未 and 巳酉丑. Each has three branches spaced four positions apart and gathering around a single element. The Dragon 辰 (chén) and the Monkey 申 (shēn) are two corners of the first triangle, the Water one: 申子辰. The third corner, the Rat 子, is absent from the pair. That gives a link "at two thirds": it exists but is not closed, and everything we say next depends on that.

At first glance this arrangement looks promising: a Three Harmony is one of the most favorable structures in the classics. In practice it needs qualifying. Two vertices without the third give only a pull in one direction, not a full merger. We will go through what this means for love, friendship and business, what the pair offers by its elements, and how 2027 goes, a year in which the missing Rat does show up in the calendar.

As always, this is a reading by birth-year signs. The birth year is one branch of the eight characters of a chart, and the character of a real couple is determined by the rest: the Day Master, the day branch and the elemental balance.

1 "Two corners of a triangle": what an incomplete triad is

In a full Three Harmony the three branches are the birth (生, shēng), the peak (旺, wàng) and the storehouse (庫, kù). In the Water combination 申 (the Monkey) is the place of Water's "birth," 子 (the Rat) is its peak and 辰 (the Dragon) is the storehouse. If all three gather in a chart, Water becomes a noticeable force that sets the direction of life. If only two are present, the result is a 半合 (bàn hé), a "half combination." The classics distinguish two variants. A strong half combination includes the central branch (申子 or 子辰); a weak one, sometimes called an arching combination 拱合 (gǒng hé, the "arch"), contains only the two outer corners without the center (申辰).

Our pair has precisely the weak variant. The Dragon and the Monkey "see" each other and are drawn together, but without the Rat there is no bridge between them. In practice it looks like an attraction that is hard to put into words: conversation comes easily, you have similar values about money and knowledge, yet there is no sense of "we are one whole." If one partner's chart contains a Rat (on the day, hour or month pillar), the triad closes and the link grows noticeably stronger. This can be checked only from the charts.

VariantMakeupStrength
Full 三合申 + 子 + 辰Maximum
Strong 半合申子 or 子辰Noticeable
Weak (arching) 拱合申 + 辰 without 子A quiet pull, depends on the rest of the chart

2 Elements: Earth produces Metal

The second line of the pair runs through the Five Elements. The Dragon is Earth, the Monkey is Metal, and Earth produces Metal. That means that in the elemental scheme the Dragon "feeds" the Monkey: gives it support, the soil in which its ideas turn into objects. The Monkey, in turn, shapes and cuts, giving form to what the Dragon has created.

Now the hidden stems 藏干 (cáng gān). The Monkey holds three: 庚 (gēng, Yang Metal) as the main one, 壬 (rén, Yang Water) and 戊 (wù, Yang Earth). The Dragon holds 戊 (Yang Earth), 乙 (yǐ, Yin Wood) and 癸 (guǐ, Yin Water).

What they shareIn the DragonIn the Monkey
Earth戊 (main)戊 (third)
Water癸 Yin壬 Yang
Only in one乙 Yin Wood庚 Yang Metal

This table shows clearly what the similarity rests on. The shared 戊 and Water (癸 in the Dragon, 壬 in the Monkey) create a common "underwater" layer: the ability to reflect, to get deeply into a subject, to hold information. The differences add another layer: the Monkey's 庚 brings decisiveness and sharpness, the Dragon's 乙 flexibility and soft persistence. So the pair complements each other without extra effort.

3 The character of the link: intelligence and ingenuity

If one quality of this combination had to be singled out, it would be clever practicality. The Dragon brings scope, the Monkey brings dexterity and resourcefulness. Together they handle complicated situations well: they can build a scheme, find a way around, reach an agreement where others failed. Partners often note that next to each other they feel smarter.

The reverse side is connected with control. Both branches know how to "keep a finger on the pulse" and each in their own way leans toward strategic thinking. When interests coincide, that is a strength. When they diverge, a quiet game begins: each calculates the other's moves, and candor retreats. A pair in which both plan better than they talk risks turning the relationship into a game of chess.

4 Love and marriage: ease and hidden calculation

In romance, the Dragon and the Monkey quickly find shared topics and rarely get bored. The Monkey brings play, humor and unexpected ideas; the Dragon gives a feeling of dependability and scale. For many people this combination feels like "it's interesting and calm with you."

The weak spot is trust. The Monkey tends toward understatement, not because she wants to deceive but because she is used to keeping fallback options. The Dragon, with a sticky memory, takes any omission seriously and remembers it for a long time. If the couple does not agree on transparency (in money, plans, contact with exes), distrust accumulates unnoticed.

A tip from practice: discuss important matters in the format "what I need" and "what I am planning," not "what you did wrong." For both the Monkey and the Dragon, a conversation about plans is safer than a conversation about reproaches. For the broader context of reading a partner from a chart, see the article Marriage in BaZi.

5 Friendship and a shared circle

Friends of this type often form a "brainstorm" alliance: they come up with projects together, share finds and argue with pleasure. The friendship easily survives pauses. The Dragon and the Monkey have many shared interests in the realm of ideas: books, technology, learning, complicated hobbies. Remember, though, that both the Monkey and the Dragon are selective in candor: they do not become real friends right away and test for a long time whether they can be trusted.

This friendship has a characteristic trap too. The Monkey loves quick experiments and easily drops something begun for something new; the Dragon sees things through and secretly takes offense when a shared undertaking is left hanging because the partner "has already caught fire for the next one." If you are friends or work on a hobby as a twosome, agree up front on something simple: what we finish, and what we honestly call a one-evening game. Then the Monkey's lightness does not turn into the Dragon's disappointment, and the Dragon's thoroughness does not look like pedantry. In practice the rule "we finish one project and discuss as many ideas as we like" works well in this pair: it separates two needs that otherwise get in each other's way.

6 Work and business: a strong pair, with a condition

It is in business that the 申辰 link shows up most brightly. The Monkey finds solutions and opportunities, and the Dragon turns them into a going concern and keeps it going. In teams and partnerships such people often prove more successful than many other combinations. A division of labor works especially well: the Monkey handles search, negotiations and "invention," the Dragon handles strategy, resources and results.

But with a weak half combination reliable rules of the game are needed. Put agreements in writing: who decides on money, how profit is divided, what happens when one partner leaves. The Monkey tends to leave doors open, the Dragon dislikes uncertainty, and without a clear agreement this will sooner or later lead to a dispute. General principles of business compatibility are in the article who to do business with according to BaZi, and on the role of Three Harmony combinations in general you can read Three Harmony 三合.

7 Where to look for the missing Rat

Since everything comes down to the third corner, it is useful to know where to look for it. A chart has eight positions, and the branch 子 can stand in any of the four earthly ones: year, month, day or hour. If either partner has a Rat, it "enters" the common picture of the pair, and the half combination 申辰 turns into a full 申子辰. If the partners' Rats stand in different pillars, the effect differs: on the day pillar (the Spouse Palace) it is felt as personal attraction, on the hour as shared plans and children, on the month as a common working environment, on the year as a family and social backdrop.

Besides natal charts, the Rat can arrive "from outside": with a year, a month or a ten-year Luck Pillar 大運 (dà yùn). In 2027 there is one such case, the 子 month in December. The next Rat year is 2032 (壬子), and before then the Rat comes only in individual months and days.

The cautious side should be remembered too. When the Water triangle closes, Water strengthens. If the charts of both partners already hold a lot of Water, the excess can bring anxiety, shakiness and a tendency to "spread out"; if Water is lacking, it is the opposite, support. That is why the same combination of signs works differently for different couples, and an honest answer here can be obtained only from the charts.

8 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them

ScenarioWhat lies behind itWhat helps
"You're hiding something"The Monkey keeps fallback options, the Dragon reads that as distrustA transparency rule for money and plans
"You calculate everything"Both are strategists, candor gives way to calculationOnce a week, a conversation with no agenda
Different tempoThe Monkey switches fast, the Dragon slowlyDecision deadlines agreed in advance
Hidden competitionBoth need to be the "smarter" oneSeparate areas where each is the lead expert
Accumulated resentmentThe Dragon remembers, the Monkey forgets quicklyDo not postpone a conversation beyond a couple of days

Note that the Monkey has difficulties of its own outside the pair: a clash with the Tiger (寅申沖), harm from the Pig (申亥害), the punishment triangle 寅巳申 and destruction by the Snake (巳申破). If a partner's chart holds many of those branches, they can affect the pair independently of the Dragon. That is exactly why full charts are needed.

9 Dragon plus Monkey in 2027

2027 is the year 丁未 (dīng wèi), the Fire Goat, beginning at 立春 (lì chūn) around February 4. The yearly branch 未 forms no direct links with either the Dragon or the Monkey: the pair passes the year without classical hints from the year pillar. The yearly stem 丁 is Yin Fire, which produces Earth, and Earth, as we remember, produces Metal. The chain "Fire → Earth → Metal" creates a common background of support for both signs, but it is not a forecast of events, merely the direction of the elements. More on each sign: Dragon, Monkey.

The most interesting part is in the monthly calendar. The months of 2027 (boundaries approximate, give or take a day):

MonthDatesWhat happens to the pair
寅 (壬寅)February 4 – March 5Monkey: 寅申沖, a clash. Dragon: only part of the spring combination
辰 (甲辰)April 5 – May 5Dragon: its own month. Monkey: the weak half combination 申辰
巳 (乙巳)May 6 – June 5Monkey: 巳申 combination, destruction and part of a punishment at once
申 (戊申)August 8 – September 7Monkey: repetition of its own branch. Dragon: the weak half combination
酉 (己酉)September 8 – October 7Dragon: 辰酉合 (Six Harmony), a mild time
戌 (庚戌)October 8 – November 6Dragon: 辰戌沖 (clash), a sharp time
亥 (辛亥)November 7 – December 6Monkey: 申亥害 (harm), a quiet damage
子 (壬子)December 7, 2027 – January 5, 2028申子辰 closes: the missing Rat appears in the calendar

The last row is a reason for optimism, with a reservation. In the final month of the year the three branches of the Water combination gather together: the Monkey, the Dragon and the 子 month. It will not become a true "Water triad" (the month will pass), but it is usually in such periods that shared goals become more visible, along with the wish to formalize them. If there is something you want to settle together, the winter 子 month is a good candidate for the conversation.

10 Why the birth year is only the top layer

Suppose you found a Three Harmony in the Dragon and the Monkey and felt reassured. But a real couple lives in another dimension: in the Day Master of each of you, in the day branch (the Spouse Palace), in the presence or absence of a Rat in the chart, in the elemental needs of both. For instance, if the Dragon's Day Master is 丙 (Yang Fire) and the Monkey's is 甲 (Yang Wood), you have a different plot altogether, "Wood feeds Fire," and the Three Harmony becomes merely a pleasant backdrop.

The right order is this: first check the five layers across two full charts (Day Masters, Spouse Palaces, elemental balance, stars, synchrony of periods; all described in the compatibility guide), and treat the birth-year signs as an additional touch. You can compare year branches in the articles on the Dragon and the Monkey, but make decisions about marriage or business from the charts.

11 Frequently asked questions

Are the Dragon and the Monkey compatible in BaZi?

Between them lies an incomplete Three Harmony 申子辰 (Water): two corners without the Rat. It is a weak pull that grows stronger if the Rat is present in a partner's chart. The result still depends on the other layers.

What does an "incomplete triad" mean?

It is a half combination, 半合. It counts as strong when it contains the central branch 子 (申子, 子辰). The pair 申辰 without the center is called the weak variant, the "arch" 拱合.

Who feeds whom by the elements?

The Dragon's Earth produces the Monkey's Metal, so the Dragon acts as the "feeding" side and the Monkey as the shaping side. This is a general scheme; real roles are determined by the charts.

What is most noticeable in 2027 for this pair?

The yearly branch 未 forms no links with them. In the monthly calendar the notable months are 酉 (September 8 – October 7, a combination for the Dragon), 戌 (October 8 – November 6, a clash for the Dragon) and 子 (December 7 – January 5), when the Monkey, the Dragon and the month close the Water triangle.

Can the two build a business together?

By the branches the pair is strong in business, but written rules are needed. The final decision should be made from the full charts.
