7 Signs of a Karmic
Bond in BaZi

You've almost certainly met someone like this. You'd barely met, and it already felt like you'd known them for a hundred years. Or the opposite: every encounter with them is a storm, yet you can't tear yourself away. Or a bond that keeps breaking and returning, as if it has unfinished business with you. In everyday language we call this "chemistry," a "soulmate," "fate." In the language of BaZi, it has a name and a structure.

1 ☯️ What 緣分 and 宿緣 are

緣分 (yuán fèn — "karmic bond," "a meeting meant to be") is one of the most beautiful and profound concepts in Chinese philosophy. 緣 (yuán) is "the condition," "the cause," the thread that binds; 分 (fèn) is "the share," "the portion," measured out by fate. Together: a thread measured out by heaven, connecting two people.

There's a Chinese saying: 有緣千里來相會, 無緣對面不相識 — "with yuán fèn, you'll meet across a thousand lǐ; without it, you'll pass by face to face." In other words, when two people meet, it isn't chance — it's the fulfillment of a condition written long ago.

Deeper still lies the concept of 宿緣 (sù yuán — "a bond from past lives," "an old thread"). 宿 (sù) means "former," "a night's lodging," "what's left over from before." In the Buddhist-Daoist tradition, this is a bond carried forward from past incarnations: an unfinished debt, love left unreturned, a lesson not yet learned. Such souls find each other again to finish what they started.

2 🤝 Sign one: a mutual 天干合 between your Day Masters

The clearest sign of a fated bond is when two 日主 (rì zhǔ — "day host," the Day Master) — the very "essence" of two people — form a 天干合 (tiān gān hé — "heavenly stem union").

BaZi has ten heavenly stems, and five pairs of them attract each other like magnets: 甲己 (jiǎ-jǐ), 乙庚 (yǐ-gēng), 丙辛 (bǐng-xīn), 丁壬 (dīng-rén), 戊癸 (wù-guǐ). When one person's Day Master "bonds" with another's, it's an energetic marriage at the level of pure essence. Two people are literally drawn to each other chemically, beyond logic or circumstance.

For example, a woman with a Day Master of 丁 (dīng — "candle, small fire") meets a man with a Day Master of 壬 (rén — "ocean, great water"). 丁壬合 is one of the most romantic unions — it's even called the "union of passion." It's an attraction you feel instantly, one that never lets go.

3 🔺 Sign two: a 三合 of the earthly branches

If 天干合 is the attraction of "souls," 三合 (sān hé — "triple combination") is the harmony of "lives" — compatibility in daily life, goals, and rhythm.

The earthly branches (the twelve animals) form four harmonious triangles. When one person's branch and another's fall into the same combination, there's a natural ease between them, a feeling of being "a team":

• 🔥 寅午戌 (yín-wǔ-xū) — the Fire combination: Tiger + Horse + Dog. A bond through passion, action, shared ambitions.
• 💧 申子辰 (shēn-zǐ-chén) — the Water combination: Monkey + Rat + Dragon. A bond through intellect, strategy, depth.
• 🌳 亥卯未 (hài-mǎo-wèi) — the Wood combination: Pig + Rabbit + Goat. A bond through gentleness, growth, care.
• 法 巳酉丑 (sì-yǒu-chǒu) — the Metal combination: Snake + Rooster + Ox. A bond through discipline, values, achievement.

When two people have both a 天干合 at the level of their Day Masters and a 三合 at the level of their earthly branches, that's a rare and powerful resonance — attraction at the level of essence, plus harmony in life.

4 🪞 Sign three: mirrored Ten Gods

One of the most touching signs of 緣分 is when you are each other's partner star. That is, his Day Master reads as your spouse star in your chart, and your Day Master reads as her spouse star in his chart. The Ten Gods (十神, shí shén — "ten deities") form a mirror image.

For example, for a woman, the husband star is 正官 (zhèng guān — the "Direct Officer"). If her man's Day Master element becomes exactly her 正官, and her element becomes his 正財 (zhèng cái — "Direct Wealth," the wife star), then they're literally "meant" for each other in the language of the chart. Each embodies exactly what the other is looking for.

5 🌸 Sign four: each other's 桃花

桃花 (táo huā — "peach blossom") is the star of romantic magnetism, attraction, and sensuality. Every person has their own "peach blossom" branch, calculated from their year sign or Day Master.

A special sign of 緣分 is when your 桃花 branch is present in your partner's chart (and even better, mutually). Then you're literally each other's "peach blossom": you awaken sensuality, desire, romantic excitement in one another. This isn't a warm, friendly bond — it's attraction with a spark, a pull that makes your head spin.

When 桃花 is mutual, the "chemistry" between two people survives even years later. It's a rare gift: many couples lose the spark, but couples with mutual 桃花 keep seeing each other as desirable.

6 🧩 Sign five: complementary 用神

This may be the most practical and the deepest sign of true 緣分. Every chart has a 用神 (yòng shén — the "Useful God," the favorable element) — the element the chart lacks for balance, its "medicine," its missing puzzle piece.

The highest form of compatibility is when one person carries, in abundance, exactly the element that is the other's 用神. Then your partner's mere presence balances your chart: next to them, you feel whole, calm, "in your place." Not because they do anything in particular — but because their energy literally completes you into balance.

This explains the mysterious feeling: "next to him, I become the best version of myself." In BaZi, this isn't a metaphor — it's an exchange of elements. It's ideal when the exchange is mutual: you're each other's 用神, and each of you completes the other.

7 ⚡ Sign six: repeated 沖 — a karmic lesson

Not every karmic bond is tender. 沖 (chōng — "clash") is a head-on standoff between two earthly branches. When two people's charts share a lot of repeated 沖, that's also 緣分 — but of a particular kind: a bond-as-lesson, 孽緣 (niè yuán — "difficult karma").

Such couples recognize each other through a familiar script: a magnetic pull that defies explanation, mixed with conflict, breakups, reunions. They're "thrown" back toward each other again and again, as if there's an unsettled account between them. Often this is exactly 宿緣, a thread from past lives, arrived to be lived out and completed.

沖 doesn't mean "a bad match." It means: this bond exists for growth, not for comfort. Through the clashes, the two of you go through what you never would have in calm waters. Sometimes such couples become the strongest of all, having walked through fire. And sometimes their task is simply to meet, teach each other a lesson, and let go.

8 📅 Sign seven: matching pillars and dates

The last, subtlest sign is when two people's fates "rhyme" across time. You can see it in matching pillars and dates:

• 🗓️ The same pillar: your Day Pillar matches your partner's Month or Year Pillar — your "time codes" resonate.
• 🗓️ The year you met: you met in a year that activated your partner star in both charts at once — heaven "opened a window" for both of you.
• 🗓️ Mirrored dates: key events (meeting, marriage) fall in years marked by romantic stars in both charts simultaneously.

When the threads of two lives cross in exactly the "right" year for both people, that's the strongest marker of 緣分. As if two independent melodies suddenly fell into the same beat.

9 💜 A karmic bond ≠ an easy bond

And here's the most important thing, worth reading all the way to. In pop culture, "karmic bond" sounds like a promise of happiness: "we're soulmates, so a fairy tale awaits us." BaZi is more honest.

緣分 isn't a guarantee of ease. It's a guarantee of significance. A karmic bond means this person didn't enter your life by accident — you share unfinished business. But that business can be a reward, or it can be a lesson. The strongest karmic bonds are often the hardest ones. They arrive to change something in you, and change is rarely painless.

So if you recognize one or more of these seven signs in your relationship, don't rush to conclude "then we're destined to be together." Ask a deeper question: what kind of bond is this? A nourishing 善緣, or a testing 孽緣? A reward, or a lesson? The chart gives you the answer — and that answer sets you free, rather than binding you.
