BaZi vs MBTI —
A Questionnaire Against a Birth Chart

MBTI and BaZi answer a similar question — "who am I?" — but they approach it from opposite angles. MBTI asks you about yourself and sorts the answers onto 16 shelves. BaZi (八字, bā zì — "eight characters") asks nothing at all: it builds a chart from the moment of birth and reads from it not just your character, but its dynamics — when your strengths will kick in, and when your weaknesses will hit. Let's compare honestly, without any "our system is older, so it's better."

1 Origins: a questionnaire vs. a calendar

MBTI is a product of the 20th century: Katharine Briggs and Isabel Myers packaged Jung's typology into a questionnaire of 90+ questions. The result depends on self-report: how you see yourself (or want to see yourself) today.

BaZi grew out of Chinese calendrical astronomy and took its final shape by the Song dynasty (10th–13th centuries). The input isn't an opinion about yourself, but a fact: the date and hour of birth, translated into four pairs of characters — the Four Pillars (四柱, sì zhù — "four pillars"). Self-deception at the input is ruled out — but an exact birth time is required.

2 16 types vs. 518,400 charts

The sixteen MBTI types are a deliberately coarse grid: an INTJ from Moscow and an INTJ from Lima get the exact same portrait. In BaZi the combinatorics work differently: 10 heavenly stems × 12 branches across four positions yield half a million base configurations, and once you factor in the Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn — "pillars of luck"), practically no two destinies are alike.

3 Are there correspondences between the types and the charts?

There's no direct dictionary of "INTJ = weak Metal" — the two systems slice reality along different axes. But there are echoes. Extraversion/introversion in BaZi reads through the yang/yin nature of the Day Master and an abundance of the Output stars 食傷 (shí shāng — "expression stars"): a person with a strong 傷官 (shāng guān — "destroyer of authority") almost always "sounds" like an extraverted debater. The rationality of J-types resembles charts with a strong Officer star 官星 (guān xīng — "star of order"), while the "eternal explorer" P resembles charts ruled by Resource stars 印星 (yìn xīng — "seal, knowledge").

4 What the science says

Let's be honest on both sides. MBTI is criticized by psychometricians for weak test-retest reliability and for imposing dichotomies where the data show continuous scales: its scientific standing is shaky, despite its corporate popularity. BaZi isn't a science at all — it's a traditional system of interpretation with a thousand years of practice: it hasn't been through controlled trials, and we say so directly (more on this in our breakdown "Is BaZi Scientific"). Choosing between them "by scientific rigor" means choosing between two non-sciences; the choice should be made by purpose instead.

5 What to choose for your purpose

Take MBTI if you need a common language for a team, a quick conversation about communication styles, onboarding without any esoterica.

Take BaZi if the question sounds like "when": when to change jobs, when to launch a project, why the 2023–2025 period was hard and what's coming in 2027. Timing is something MBTI physically doesn't have.

Combine them: MBTI shows how you think, BaZi shows what to do about it and when. Contradictions between the two usually mean the questionnaire caught your "storefront," while the chart caught the foundation.
