In the BaZi system (八字, bā zì), each of the four pillars (四柱, sì zhù — "four pillars") corresponds to a specific period of life and area of being. The Year Pillar (年柱, nián zhù) is ancestors, childhood, connection to the wider society. The Month Pillar (月柱, yuè zhù) is career, parents, youth. The Day Pillar (日柱, rì zhù) is you yourself and your partner, maturity. And finally, the Hour Pillar (時柱, shí zhù) is children, legacy, the inner world, and later life.
1 What the Hour Pillar reveals
The Hour Pillar carries information about several important areas of life:
- 👶 Children (子嗣, zǐ sì): how many children, what they'll be like, your relationship with them. A 食神 (shí shén — the "Eating God") in this pillar is especially good for motherhood;
- 🌙 The inner world and hidden desires: what a person doesn't show the world — fears, dreams, spirituality. The hour's heavenly stem is the "public" face of this; the hour's earthly branch is the "hidden" one;
- 🏡 Later life (老年運, lǎo nián yùn — "luck in old age"): how the second half of life goes, whether there's support in old age;
- 🎁 Legacy and what you pass on: what a person leaves behind — to their children, to the world, to history.
2 Why the exact time of birth matters
The Twelve Earthly Branches (地支, dì zhī) divide the day into 12 equal two-hour periods. A difference of a single minute can flip the Hour Branch entirely — meaning a fundamentally different Hour Pillar, a different set of hidden stems (藏干, cáng gān), and different Ten Gods.
3 The 12 Hour Branches: what each hour is like
Every two hours corresponds to one of the earthly branches. Here are their traits from the perspective of the Hour Pillar:
The hour of dark water — deep intuition, nighttime thinking. Children are smart, introverted. Old age is quiet, contemplative. A rich inner world, invisible from outside.
The hour of nighttime perseverance. Children are methodical, hardworking, sometimes loners. Later life bears fruit through accumulated labor. Inner world: values, tradition.
The dawn hour of the leader. Children are active, enterprising, born for leadership. Later life brings expansion, new projects. Inner world: ambition and independence.
Sunrise. Children are gentle, diplomatic, artistic. Later life brings harmony, a beautiful home life, cultural interests. Inner world: aesthetics and a love of peace.
The morning of the storage vault. Children are multifaceted (the Dragon carries three hidden stems). Later life brings accumulated wisdom, spiritual growth. Inner world: complex, layered.
The hour of insight. Children are smart, often with hidden talents. Later life can bring unexpected wealth (the Snake hides Metal 庚 and Earth 戊). Inner world: wisdom and intuition.
The peak of the day. Children are energetic, freedom-loving, travelers at heart. Later life stays active, full of movement. Inner world: freedom, motion, passion.
Afternoon. Children are creative, sensitive. Later life leans on family and loved ones. Inner world: art, nurturing, caring for others.
The hour of cleverness. Children are smart, cunning, enterprising. Later life preserves the fruits of one's labor (the Monkey carries Metal 庚). Inner world: strategic thinking.
The sunset hour of Metal. Children are precise, perfectionist, with refined taste. Later life brings cleanliness, order, high standards. Inner world: critical judgment and elegance.
The hour of loyalty. Children are loyal, devoted, with strong values. Later life brings protection of loved ones, spiritual practice (the Dog carries 辛 Metal and 丁 Fire). Inner world: a sense of justice.
The night hour of stillness. Children are kind, intuitive, creative. Later life brings solitude, spiritual searching. Inner world: a deep inner life, generosity, mysticism.
4 Children in the chart: what to read in the Hour Pillar
To understand the theme of children, we look not just at the Hour Branch itself, but at the stars within the pillar:
- 真 食神 (shí shén) in the Hour Pillar: a strong sign for children, especially for women — favorable motherhood, easy childbirth, warm relationships with offspring;
- ⚡ 偏印 (piān yìn) attacking 食神 in the Hour Pillar: difficulty conceiving or challenges raising children;
- 💎 正官 (zhèng guān) in a woman's Hour Pillar: the children have a good career and status;
- 🔥 七殺 (qī shā) in the Hour Pillar: the children are vivid, strong — but demand a lot of their parents' energy.
5 How the Hour Pillar shapes later life
In BaZi tradition, the Hour Pillar governs the period after age 50–55 (the exact age depends on your specific Luck Pillars). This is the "evening of life" — a time when your career is behind you, your children are grown, and the inner world, legacy, and support from your offspring take center stage.
- If the Hour Pillar is favorable (the right element, no clashes), old age is calm, supported, meaningful;
- If the Hour Pillar clashes (沖, chōng — "clash") with the Day Pillar, expect estrangement from children or difficulties in later life;
- A strong 正財 (zhèng cái — "Direct Wealth") in a man's Hour Pillar means a prosperous later life.
