The Water element (水, shuǐ) in Wu Xing is the deepest phase of the cycle — the phase of stillness, storage, concentrated potential. It's the "winter" element, so it's tied to what we hold at the very core of the body — Jing energy, the hereditary potential passed down from our parents. In the body it corresponds to the kidneys and bladder, the reproductive system, bones, bone marrow, the brain, the ears, and the hair on the head.

This article is an in-depth look at how the Water element in a BaZi chart relates to kidney and reproductive health. If your Day Master is Rén 壬 or Guǐ 癸, or if your chart shows a sharp excess or shortage of Water, this material speaks directly to you.

1 The kidney meridian in Traditional Chinese Medicine

The kidney meridian (足少陰腎經, zú shào yīn shèn jīng) is the "deepest" meridian in the body. It starts on the sole of the foot (the Yǒng Quán point, 涌泉, the "Bubbling Spring"), runs up the inner leg to the kidneys, on to the bladder, and rises to the chest and throat. Its paired meridian, the bladder, is the longest in the body, running down the back of the body from the eye to the little toe.

The kidneys' functions in TCM:

Kidney hours: 5–7 PM (酉时) is the peak of the kidney meridian. 3–5 PM (申时) is the peak of the bladder. If you feel a crash, fatigue, or lower-back pain during these hours, that's a signal.

2 Water and the emotion of fear

Water's "root emotion" is fear (恐, kǒng) and its subtler version, apprehension (惊, jīng, which can also be translated as "fright"). The link runs both ways:

Chronic background fear is especially dangerous. This is social fear, fear about money, fear of aging, fear of loneliness. It drains Jing day after day, giving you no chance to recover. That's why working through fear in psychotherapy is direct support for the kidneys.

Modern neurobiology confirms this well: chronically elevated cortisol (the fear and stress hormone) breaks down bone, muscle, immunity, and the reproductive system — exactly what TCM assigns to the kidneys.

3 Weak Water = fatigue, impotence, infertility

When there's little Water in a chart (under 5–7%), or the Day Master is Water without support, we speak of "empty" Water. This is the most concerning pattern from the standpoint of a long, healthy life, because Jing is your "fuel tank."

Symptoms of weak Water

Chart signs

Jing is life's "bank account." Spend it recklessly, and you steal years from your future. Preserve it, and you extend your life.

4 Strong Water = swelling, depression, libido

The reverse situation: 40% Water or more, a Water Day Master in the winter season with triple support. This is "stagnant" Water, a swamp.

Symptoms of strong Water

Dangerous combinations: strong Water + weak Fire means a "drowned emperor": depression, apathy, cold-induced heart disease. Strong Water + strong Earth means "muddy" states, swelling plus diabetes.

5 Chart signs: Water attacked by Earth

In the Wu Xing cycle, Earth controls Water (Earth "absorbs," "chokes" Water). When a chart has strong, unbalanced Earth, it "presses down" on Water — creating kidney problems.

Specific configurations

Chronic stress is especially dangerous with this configuration — stress activates "rumination" (the Earth element), which in turn strikes at "fear" (the Water element).

6 Bones, teeth, ears — organs of Water

Besides the kidneys themselves, Water governs several structures that TCM treats as indicators of Jing.

Bones and teeth

"The kidneys govern the bones." The state of the skeletal system directly reflects Jing:

Ears and hearing

"The kidneys open into the ears." The link between the kidneys and hearing is one of the best-documented in Eastern medicine:

Hair

"The kidneys manifest in the hair":

The brain

In TCM, the brain is the "sea of marrow," and its food is kidney Jing. That's why weak Jing means poor memory, slow thinking, declining cognitive function. TCM treats dementia and Alzheimer's as deep Jing depletion.

7 Prevention for Water

The main strategy is preserving Jing. This is the body's most valuable energy, and it can't be bought or fully restored. It can only be spent slowly or quickly.

What preserves and nourishes Jing

8 Herbs and foods for Water

Supporting the kidneys is one of the most developed areas of TCM. Hundreds of formulas and herbs target exactly this. Here are the most accessible ones:

🥜
Walnuts
They resemble kidneys in shape. A classic food for Jing. 5–7 walnuts a day.
🫘
Black beans
The "color of the kidneys" is black. Support the water-salt balance, provide minerals for the bones.
🌰
Black sesame
One of the best foods for Jing, hair, and bones. Best lightly toasted.
🌿
Shú Dì Huáng (熟地黄)
Prepared rehmannia root — the main TCM remedy for nourishing kidney Jing and blood.
🍀
Hé Shǒu Wū (何首乌)
"Turns hair black" — a classic remedy for premature graying and weak Jing.
🐚
Seafood, sea salt
The "salty taste" in TCM corresponds to Water. Kelp, seaweed, fish — food for the kidneys.

The main classical formula for a kidney Yin deficiency is Liù Wèi Dì Huáng Wán (六味地黄丸), the "Six-Flavor Rehmannia Pill." For a kidney Yang deficiency, it's Yòu Guī Wán (右归丸) or Jīn Kuì Shèn Qì Wán (金匮肾气丸).

9 Da Yun: years of elevated kidney risk

Two types of Da Yun are especially critical for the kidneys:

Cycles of a "blow to Water" (Earth)

If your Day Master is Water, and a Da Yun with strong Earth arrives (Wù-Xū 戊戌, Wù-Chén 戊辰, Jǐ-Chǒu 己丑, Jǐ-Wèi 己未), this is a direct attack on the kidneys. Earth "chokes" Water.

Symptoms: chronic pyelonephritis, nephropathy, cystitis, kidney stones; in women, gynecological inflammation; in men, prostatitis.

Cycles of "drying out" (excess Fire and Earth)

If cycles with strong Fire and Earth together arrive (Bǐng-Xū 丙戌, Dīng-Wèi 丁未), this "dries out" Jing. Infertility, impotence, premature menopause, osteoporosis.

During such a 10-year period, it's recommended to:

Annual risks

If your chart has 子 (Rat), Ox years (丑) can "bind" your Water — urological problems. If it has 亥 (Pig), Snake years (巳) bring a Fire-Water chōng, raising the risk of acute events.

10 Specific diagnoses by configuration

Scenario 1: Weak Water with no support

A Rén or Guǐ Day Master in a summer month, with no roots in the branches, minimal Metal.

  • Functional infertility;
  • Premature menopause (before 45);
  • Deep chronic fatigue;
  • Early-onset osteoporosis;
  • Tinnitus, progressive hearing loss.

Scenario 2: Strong Water in excess

A Rén or Guǐ Day Master in a winter month, 3+ Water signs in the chart.

  • Chronic edema syndrome;
  • Kidney stones;
  • "Cold-type" depression with phobias;
  • Hypothyroidism;
  • Gynecological inflammation in women (Yin-cold in the Lower Burner).

Scenario 3: Water attacked by Earth

Water is present, but strong Earth sits nearby, or there's a Pig-Dragon / Rat-Ox chōng.

  • Chronic pyelonephritis;
  • Glomerulonephritis;
  • Cystitis with flare-ups;
  • In men, chronic prostatitis;
  • In women, ovarian cysts, endometriosis with an inflammatory component.

Scenario 4: A parched chart (no Water + strong Fire)

Water is entirely absent from the chart while Fire and Earth are strong.

  • Infertility, especially in women;
  • Endocrine-type impotence;
  • Premature aging;
  • Dry skin, mucous membranes, eyes (Sjögren's syndrome);
  • Early gray hair and balding;
  • Chronic thirst, a tendency toward diabetes.

Scenario 5: Jing-Shen Bù Jiāo (Jing and Shen disconnected)

A sharp split in the chart: the top (stems) are Fire and Wood, the bottom (branches) are Water and Earth, with no link between them.

  • Insomnia with anxiety + lower-back weakness;
  • Hot flashes with cold feet;
  • Impotence alongside high mental agitation;
  • Menopausal syndrome in women;
  • Panic disorder with a cardiac component.
Water is the depth where everything we'll pass on to the next generation is stored. Caring for your kidneys means caring not just for yourself, but for your children too.

Jing can't be "stockpiled" the way Qi or blood can. It can only be spent wisely. That's why the health strategy for people with vulnerable Water in their chart is a strategy of a long, steady life rhythm: go to bed early, protect your lower back, keep your sexual energy within reasonable bounds, work through your fears, and get regular baseline checkups of your kidneys and reproductive system.
