If there's one question in BaZi that everything starts from, it's the strength of the Day Master. Is yours strong, or weak? Because the answer flips the entire interpretation: the same element is a blessing for a strong Day Master, and poison for a weak one. Mix it up, and the whole reading runs backward. 🧭

The good news: you can make a rough strength assessment yourself, step by step, by counting points. It won't replace a professional calculation involving hidden stems and combinations, but it will give you an honest reference point. Grab your chart (build one for free if you don't have one yet), get a sheet of paper ready — and let's go.

日主
Rì Zhǔ · Day Master
rì zhǔ · Day Master · the Heavenly Stem of the birth day

0 Is your 日主 strong or weak? Let's check step by step

First, let's agree on the terms. 日主 (rì zhǔ — "Day Master"), also 日元 (rì yuán — "root of the day"), is the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar. It's "you" inside the chart. The remaining seven characters either strengthen the Day Master or weaken it.

Two groups strengthen: kin of the same element, and the resource that feeds you. Three groups weaken: what controls you, what you produce and spend energy on, and what you conquer. Our test simply tallies the balance.

🎯What you'll need: your Four Pillars chart (year / month / day / hour) showing the heavenly stems and earthly branches, and an understanding of which of the five elements your Day Master belongs to. The free "Oracle" calculation gives you all of this.

1 Step 1: were you born in your own season? 得令

This is the single heaviest factor — no wonder it's called "the command." It's about 得令 (dé lìng — "receiving the month's command"): whether your Day Master's element matches the season (the month's earthly branch) at birth. The month is the strongest pillar in the chart — it sets the "weather" for everyone else.

+2
You were born in your own season. The Day Master's element matches the month's season (Wood — spring 寅卯辰, Fire — summer 巳午未, Metal — autumn 申酉戌, Water — winter 亥子丑, Earth — the transitional months 辰戌丑未). Write down +2 points.
+1
The season feeds you (resource). The month carries an element that produces yours (for example, you're Wood, and the month is Water). This is 印 (yìn — "resource") in the month. Write down +1 point.
−2
The season is against you. The month carries an element that controls or drains yours (for example, you're Wood, and the month is autumn-Metal). This is 失令 (shī lìng — "losing the month's command"). Write down −2 points.

Remember: 得令 is half the battle. A Day Master that receives the month's command is already half strong, even if the rest of the chart offers little support.

2 Step 2: are there "roots" 通根 in the earthly branches?

A heavenly stem with no root is like a flag with no pole: pretty, but it falls in the wind. A "root" is 通根 (tōng gēn — "connection to the root"): the presence of your element (or a nourishing resource) among the chart's earthly branches, including the stems hidden inside the branches.

+2
A strong root in the day or month branch. Beneath your Day Master (the day branch) or in the month branch is a hidden stem of your own element. This is the sturdiest support. +2 points.
+1
A root in the year or hour branch. Your element is hidden in the farther branches (year / hour). There's support, but it's weaker. +1 point per such root (maximum +2).
0
No roots at all. No branch contains your element or resource. The stem is "hanging in mid-air" — a serious sign of weakness. 0 points (and take note).
🌳A picture: the stem is what's visible above ground. Roots 通根 are what hold the tree in the soil. You can have a powerful stem (a Day Master in a strong season), but without roots it won't survive a storm of luck pillars. And conversely — a modest stem with deep roots is remarkably stable.

3 Step 3: how many allies 比肩劫財 and how much resource 印?

Now let's count "your own team" among the chart's eight characters. Allies are the same element as you: 比肩 (bǐ jiān — "equal, fellow ally") (same element, same polarity) and 劫財 (jié cái — "wealth robber, rival") (same element, opposite polarity). Plus the resource 印 (yìn — "resource, seal") — the element that produces and feeds you.

+1
For every visible ally among the stems. Every heavenly stem of your own element (比肩 or 劫財) in the year/month/hour. +1 point each (usually a maximum of +2…+3).
+1
For every resource stem 印. Every heavenly stem of the element that produces you. The resource "pours" strength into you. +1 point each.
+½
For support in the branches. Additional branches carrying your element or resource (beyond those already counted in Step 2). Add roughly +1 point in total if there are two or more such branches.

The more "your own kind" in the chart, the harder it is to break the Day Master. But don't celebrate the count too soon — an excess of allies without an outlet for the energy makes the chart "overloaded with itself." More on that in the results section.

4 Step 4: how many "opponents" 官杀 食傷 財?

Now we subtract. Three groups of gods spend and weaken the Day Master. For every visible representative among the stems — minus a point.

−1
Control — 官杀 (guān shā — "authority and killer"). The element that controls yours (for Wood — Metal). 正官 disciplines, 七杀 attacks. −1 point per stem.
−1
Output — 食傷 (shí shāng — "output and hurting"). The element you produce (for Wood — Fire). 食神 and 傷官 "flow out" of you, spending your strength. −1 point per stem.
−1
Wealth — 財 (cái — "wealth"). The element you control (for Wood — Earth). Conquering it costs the Day Master strength. −1 point per stem.
誤A nuance: 官杀 (control) weakens the most, along with a strong 食傷 (output), especially when they sit in a season favorable to themselves. Wealth 財 also drains, but in a "pleasant" way. If you have many "opponents" among the stems and they're rooted in the branches, subtract more boldly.

5 Step 5: the 日主's position and support from neighboring pillars

The final touch is neighborhood. The day pillar doesn't live in a vacuum: it's "flanked" by the month pillar on the left and the hour pillar on the right. What sits right next to it matters more than the distant year pillar.

+1
Neighbors are friendly. The month and/or hour carry your element or the resource 印. The Day Master "sits" in support. +1 point.
−1
Neighbors press in. The month and hour carry control 官杀 or output 食傷, squeezing the Day Master from both sides. −1 point.
0
Neutral. The neighbors are mixed, or belong to wealth 財. The position is unclear. 0 points.

Now add everything up: the points from Steps 1–5, pluses and minuses. The resulting number is your reference point for Day Master strength. On to the scale.

Day Master strength isn't "good" or "bad." It's the direction in which the chart seeks balance.

6 Scoring: the result scale

Add up your total and find your range. The scale is calibrated for "paper" precision — it's a reference point, not a verdict.

≤ −3
Very weak 日主. The Day Master has almost no support. The chart badly needs resource 印 and allies. Sometimes this is a "follows-the-leader" structure.
−2 … 0
Weak 日主. Little support, more opponents. Elements that strengthen you are favorable: resource and "your own kin."
+1 … +2
Balanced. Strength and expenditure are roughly even. The most flexible type — but also the trickiest to analyze, since the balance tips easily.
+3 … +5
Strong 日主. Plenty of support. Elements that "unload" you are favorable: wealth 財, output 食傷, control 官杀.
≥ +6
Very strong 日主. An excess of your own strength. The chart is almost "bursting" with energy — it desperately needs an outlet and a use, or the strength turns against its own master.

7 What your result means: a strategy for each type

Strength on its own "decides" nothing — what matters is what you do with it. Here's a short strategy for each type:

🔵
Weak and very weak
Your luck lies in nourishment and support. Resource 印 and allies are favorable. Avoid overloading with control and heavy expenditure. Take money "carefully": a weak DM struggles to hold onto large 財.
🟢
Balanced
A rare and fortunate type: the chart adapts easily. Luck is determined by subtle factors — season, combinations, the chart's climate. This is exactly where it's easiest to go wrong without a professional reading.
🔴
Strong and very strong
You need an outlet for your energy: work, creativity, responsibility, money. 食傷, 財, 官杀 are favorable. An excess of resource and allies is dangerous — it "clogs" a chart that's already overflowing.

Notice the paradox: what helps a weak Day Master harms a strong one, and vice versa. That's exactly why determining the strength is task number one. A mistake here flips every recommendation 180 degrees: you'd be "strengthening" a chart that's already overflowing, or "unloading" one that's already weak.

8 Disclaimer: an exact calculation is more complex

Honestly: this test is a simplification. It gives the right direction in most ordinary charts, but a real strength analysis accounts for things that are almost impossible to tally by hand "on paper":

So treat your number as a compass, not a GPS. If the result lands close to a range boundary (for example, +2 or +3), you almost certainly need a professional reading: borderline charts are exactly where beginners make the most mistakes.

🧪Check yourself: build a chart in the "Oracle" — the system will calculate strength accounting for hidden stems and combinations. Compare its result with your "paper" score. A match — congratulations, you've grasped the logic. A mismatch — a great reason to look into the chart's hidden layers.

Day Master strength is the key that unlocks the rest of the chart: which element is luck for you, which luck pillars will be "yours," where the money is, where the risk is. Five minutes on this test is the best investment of time for anyone just starting to read their own BaZi. 🟣
