In the Chinese cycle of twelve branches, the Tiger 寅 (yín) and the Rabbit 卯 (mǎo) stand side by side, and both belong to Wood. The Tiger opens spring; the Rabbit holds its middle. Ask a casual zodiac fan how they get along and you will hear something about "a forest and a flower meadow." BaZi puts it more dryly, and more interestingly. Two branches of one element do not complete each other the way Water and Wood do, and they do not fight the way Metal and Wood do. They live next door, and they understand very well what the other one wants. That produces both the warmest and the most tiring partnerships.
First, a word about scale. The birth-year sign is one branch out of the four in your chart, roughly one-eighth of all the characters. Everything below describes only that top layer: how the branches 寅 and 卯 behave when they meet, and what they bring to a couple as general background. Real compatibility between two people is decided by the Day Master (日主, rì zhǔ), the day branches and the elemental balance of both full charts. The last sections explain how.
We will also look at 2027, the year 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat. For the Tiger it is a neutral year, while the Rabbit and the Goat form half of a Three Harmony. For a Tiger–Rabbit couple that means some fairly concrete things, and we will walk through them month by month.
1 What links 寅 and 卯: a seasonal gathering with one member missing
The classical connection between these two branches is the Directional Combination 三會 (sān huì) 寅卯辰. Three spring branches, the Tiger, the Rabbit and the Dragon, gather the Wood of an entire season. Many schools regard it as the most powerful of the group combinations, stronger than the Three Harmony 三合, because it unites not "four temperaments of one element" but a whole time of year. In our pair, though, only two of the three branches are present. The Dragon 辰 is missing, and the classics speak of an incomplete gathering in such cases: the direction is set, but there is not enough force to carry it through until the third branch arrives from another pillar, from a Luck Pillar or from a month.
In practice this reads as follows. The Tiger and the Rabbit share one spring. Both like to begin, both feel time as a resource for growth, and both get bored quickly among frozen things. Nobody has to explain to either of them why you would get up early for an idea, and both find "let's sit and think about it for another year" equally hard to bear. Their joint energy runs in the same direction rather than complementing, and that explains most of the pair's strengths and weaknesses.
Look at the hidden stems. In the Tiger 寅 the main stem is 甲 (jiǎ), Yang Wood, plus 丙 (bǐng) and 戊 (wù). The Rabbit 卯 contains nothing but 乙 (yǐ), Yin Wood: one pure element with no admixture. The result is a "trunk and vine" pair. 甲 is the tall, straight tree; 乙 is grass, a flower, a creeper that holds on to a wall. The classic image of the two Woods is that 乙 climbs upward by leaning on 甲, while 甲 does not have to bend. The same picture has another version, in which 乙 wraps around and chokes. Which one you get depends on the balance of forces in the charts, not on the two animals.
| 寅 Tiger | 卯 Rabbit | |
|---|---|---|
| Branch element | Yang Wood | Yin Wood |
| Hidden stems | 甲 (main), 丙, 戊 | 乙 (only) |
| Seasonal position | early spring, from about 4 February (立春 lì chūn) | mid-spring, from about 6 March (驚蟄 jīng zhé) |
| Tempo | a sprint, a start | growth, tuning, polishing |
| Classical links between the two | incomplete directional combination 寅卯辰; no 合, 冲, 刑, 害 or 破 directly between 寅 and 卯 | |
2 The character of the pair: brother and sister, not opposites
If you want an honest metaphor, think of a brother and sister who grew up in the same house rather than "opposites attract." The Tiger is the one who makes the decision and goes first. The Rabbit senses where the decision will lead and adjusts the trajectory. On good days this works as a considered tandem: one brings drive, the other taste and a sense of proportion. On bad days the Tiger thinks the Rabbit is braking, and the Rabbit thinks the Tiger is not listening.
Neither branch is tied to the other by a combination, a clash, a harm or a punishment. That is an important detail: the pair has no pre-written dramatic script, unlike the Tiger and the Monkey or the Rabbit and the Rooster. Everything is decided not by the signs but by what sits in the other places of the chart. A Tiger and a Rabbit can turn out to be a remarkably peaceful couple, or they can drive each other into a quiet war over household trivia, and in both cases the cause will be other pillars.
One more feature of same-element pairs: the element gets amplified rather than balanced. If both charts already hold too much Wood and too little Fire, Earth and Water, the partners will reinforce a shared lopsidedness: they ignite quickly, promise a lot and fix little in place. If, on the contrary, there is little Wood in the charts, such a partner becomes a living supply, and the pair feels like "finally someone next to me who gets it." The element a chart needs is called the Useful God (用神, yòng shén), and its lack or excess decides far more than the similarity of the signs.
3 Love and marriage: a shared language and a crowded kitchen
In relationships these branches have a rare advantage: mutual recognition. The Tiger does not take offense when the Rabbit sometimes withdraws into themselves; the Rabbit is not frightened when the Tiger flares up and forgets the reason an hour later. It is easy from the first date: topics turn up fast, the humor is similar, the plans sound convincing. Many such couples say it felt as if they had "known each other for ages."
The difficulties come later, once shared domestic life begins, and they are quite typical. Both need freedom, but in different forms. The Tiger needs room to act; the Rabbit needs quiet and a private territory. If the couple rents one small apartment and spends every evening with work and rest in the same room, irritation grows precisely along that axis. The practical advice is simple and requires no astrology: each person needs their own place and their own hour.
The second theme is money and promises. The Tiger tends to promise broadly; the Rabbit remembers every word. The Tiger sincerely says "we'll buy a car in the fall" and in the fall does not think about it, while the Rabbit waits. One trick helps here: write shared plans down, turning conversations into agreements. It sounds bureaucratic, but it saves months of quiet dissatisfaction.
When a chart is read for marriage, the Spouse Palace 夫妻宮 (fū qī gōng) is the branch of the day pillar. If one partner has the Tiger there and the other the Rabbit, the couple gets exactly the seasonal link described above. If 寅 and 卯 stand only in the year pillars, their influence is weaker: the year pillar speaks of the family line and background, not of the intimate core of the union. The difference seems subtle, yet it explains why two "Tiger and Rabbit" couples can live completely differently.
4 Friendship and work
In friendship and in a team the pairing works better than in love, because the struggle for territory disappears. Tiger and Rabbit friends are the ones who start things together: one finds the idea and knocks on doors, the other brings it into neat form. Joint projects that have both a creative part and a "launch" part go well: a small publishing start-up, a workshop, courses, a studio.
In business the pair most often breaks at the routine stage. Spring branches dislike monotony: when the project has stabilized and needs months of even work, both start looking toward something new. A third person is needed, someone with strong Earth or Metal, able to hold the structure and carry things through to delivery. In terms of branches, this is exactly the gap left by the missing Dragon 辰: Earth and storehouse, the thing that puts spring growth in order. For a business partnership it is often enough for someone whose chart carries the right element to take on that role, rather than hunting for "the right sign."
We have written about business compatibility as a separate topic in partners in business; it covers what to check in the partners' charts beyond their signs.

Speed against measure. The Tiger has already decided; the Rabbit is still weighing. Agree on a "one day for big things" rule: any decision costing more than a month's income waits a day. The Tiger keeps the pace and the Rabbit gets time.
Bluntness against tact. The Tiger says it as it is, and the Rabbit hears a verdict on their character. A formula helps: "here is the fact, here is my request." Not "you forgot again" but "on Friday I was counting on your call."
A shared element tilt. When both are under strain, both burn and both go silent. Look for an outside counterweight to what this pair structurally lacks: Metal (deadlines, rules, finishing), Earth (household, rituals, a common budget) or Fire, in which Wood turns into deeds and results. Water is not a helper here: it only feeds the already strong Wood.
Competition for leadership. The Rabbit is soft on the surface but stubborn. If leadership is divided by zone (money is yours, vacations are mine), there are fewer quarrels than when you try to "pick a boss."
A cramped shared space. A personal corner for each and separate working time. A banal measure, yet in this pair it works better than any practice.
6 This pair in 2027: the Goat year 丁未
The year 2027 is 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat. It opens with the node 立春 (lì chūn) around 4 February 2027. The year's supreme deity, Tai Sui 太歲, is the branch 未. Let us see how each partner relates to it.
Tiger 寅. There are no direct classical links with the Goat, so it is a neutral year. Whatever matters comes not from the branch but from the stem 丁: Yin Fire is born from Wood, so the Tiger, as a Wood branch, feeds the year's Fire. For the chart this is more a year of spending energy than of accumulating it: many chances to act and little time to catch one's breath. More in the article 2027 for the Tiger.
Rabbit 卯. Here there is a link: 卯 and 未 belong to the Three Harmony 三合 亥卯未 (hài-mǎo-wèi, Wood). A pair of two branches is called an incomplete triple. To assemble the full combination the Pig 亥 is needed. And here is the interesting part: the month 辛亥 runs from 7 November to 6 December 2027, so in that month the Rabbit gets the full triple (卯 from the chart, 未 from the year, 亥 from the month). For the Tiger 寅 the same month brings 寅亥, a Six Harmony 六合, but also a destruction 破, a pairing where the merging comes with a slight discord. The classics are careful: do not read any of these links as a sentence. See also 2027 for the Rabbit.
The month calendar for the pair looks like this.
| Month in 2027 | What happens between 寅 and 卯 |
|---|---|
| 壬寅, 4 Feb – 5 Mar | The Tiger's month: the Tiger is "at home," and a second 寅 joins the seasonal link with the Rabbit. A strong impulse to begin. |
| 癸卯, 6 Mar – 4 Apr | The Rabbit's month. Both branches are in their own field; ideal for joint plans, worse for anyone who dislikes pressure. |
| 甲辰, 5 Apr – 5 May | The Dragon 辰 arrives: 寅卯辰 closes into a full Directional Combination. The densest spring month of the year for the pair. |
| 戊申, 8 Aug – 7 Sep | For the Tiger, the clash 寅申: trips, revised plans. The Rabbit goes through more evenly. |
| 己酉, 8 Sep – 7 Oct | Now it is the Rabbit's turn: the clash 卯酉. The Tiger is neutral. Two autumn months in a row, someone in the pair is "on the move." |
| 庚戌, 8 Oct – 6 Nov | The Rabbit meets 卯戌, a Six Harmony; the Tiger gets half of the triple 寅午戌. A soft month for drawing closer. |
| 辛亥, 7 Nov – 6 Dec | For the Rabbit, the full combination 亥卯未; for the Tiger, 寅亥 as a harmony and a destruction at once. |
This is general background by sign. In practice your month is also shaped by the pillars you bring to the year. For a personal forecast you need a yearly reading from your chart: Year Ahead Context 2027 ($19.90).
7 Why the birth-year sign is only the top layer
Imagine two Rabbits. One has the Day Master 甲, the other 辛. The first has a lot of Wood in the chart, and next to that person the couple feels a mighty spring. In the second, Metal cuts Wood, and the same Rabbit behaves very differently beside a Tiger. One "sign" yields different people because character is set by the Day Master (日主), the element of the day of birth, not of the year.
Real compatibility is built on several checks, which we described in detail in the compatibility guide:
Day Masters: whether they feed each other, control each other or simply sit side by side, and whether there is a stem combination.
Day branches (Spouse Palaces): which links exist between them (合, 冲, 刑, 害, 破) or whether there are none.
Needed elements: what each chart lacks and whether the partner provides it.
Relationship stars: the temperaments and boundaries the charts declare.
Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn): how the decades line up, that is, who is rising and who is pausing.
Tiger and Rabbit as signs are a good start to a conversation, but not a conclusion. Pairs with an "unlucky" branch combination sometimes live together for decades, while "perfect" matches at the year level fall apart. There is no compatibility percentage here, only a map of supports and weak points.
8 If you are a Tiger and your partner is a Rabbit (or the reverse): what to do first
This is the practical minimum that needs neither a consultation nor a calculator. First, find out the day branches of both of you: they show whether the spring link really lives in the couple. Second, count how much Wood each chart holds. If wooden characters clearly outnumber all others, the pair will need balancing: more structure, deadlines and finished tasks, fewer new beginnings. Third, check whether both charts hold a Dragon 辰 or, conversely, a Dog 戌, because the Dragon completes the directional combination, while the Dog 戌 gives the harmony 卯戌 and half of the triple 寅午戌.
And last, look at the periods. In a pair of the same element, matching in temperament is not enough; what matters is that your weak years do not coincide. If both of you hit a downturn in the same year, it will be hard together, and the couple will cope only with outside support. A free chart is a good place to begin: it takes a couple of minutes at the free chart page.
9 Frequently asked questions
Are the Tiger and the Rabbit compatible?
By birth-year signs there is neither a harmony nor a clash between them: 寅 and 卯 form an incomplete directional combination 寅卯辰 and share the element Wood. It is a neutral-to-warm pair. The final verdict comes from comparing the full charts.
Why are they so alike and yet tire each other out?
A shared element amplifies shared tendencies: both start fast and get bored with routine. If the charts already hold an excess of Wood, each partner adds fuel to the other's fire. Metal and Earth in daily life (deadlines, rules, a shared budget) and a clear division of responsibility help.
What does the Goat year 2027 change for the pair?
The Tiger gets a neutral year, while the Rabbit gets half of the Three Harmony 亥卯未. For the Rabbit the full combination forms in the month 辛亥 (7 November – 6 December 2027). This is general background, not an event.
Can they run a business together?
The pair handles a launch well and routine less well. A third participant with strong Earth or Metal, who holds the structure, rescues it. Business compatibility is still read from charts, not from the zodiac.
Is a reading needed if the signs are already "good"?
The birth-year sign is one of eight characters. The Day Master, the day branches and the Luck Pillars can either strengthen the link or cancel it out, so serious decisions are better checked against the full charts.
