Snake and Snake: the mirror pair

When both partners were born in a Snake year, friends usually ask two questions. The first: "Are they twins?" The second: "How have they not killed each other yet?" Both are funny, and both are not far from the truth. In the Chinese tradition, identical branches side by side are called 伏吟 (fú yín, the "muffled moan"), and in a chart it is felt as an echo: whatever one person has sounds a second time in the other, sometimes louder.

In BaZi, a pair of identical signs receives neither a special blessing nor a curse. The formula "like loves like" does not work here. What exactly doubles and what balances out depends on everything else in the charts. But the year layer does allow a few observations. We start with the branch.

1 What kind of branch 巳 is, and what it hides

巳 (sì, the Snake) is the sixth branch of the cycle, the start of summer (roughly 6 May to 5 June in the solar calendar). Its nature is double: Yin in form, Yang in content. The hidden stems 藏干 (cáng gān) of the Snake are these:

In 巳, the classics say, Metal is "born": 金長生在巳, the life of Metal begins in the Snake. This is used to explain the famous duality of the sign: reserve outside, heat and a blade inside. That is why the Snake is so often described as enigmatic and strategic. Now put two of them side by side.

2 What doubles

In a pair of two Snakes, the strengths and the vulnerabilities are the same on both sides. Here is what stands out most.

• Secrecy. Neither likes to speak directly about what matters. On good days this is tact; on bad days it is two people quietly offended, each convinced that the partner "should understand without being told."
• Pride. A Snake remembers how it was treated. Two Snakes are capable of waging a quiet war while wearing a polite face.
• Accuracy of judgement. They see through each other quickly. It helps in choosing people but rules out the small "white lie" that keeps domestic peace.
• Taste and intuition. Both notice details, choose quality and cannot stand fuss. The home of such a pair is usually beautiful and calm, but spending on beauty doubles too.

3 Love and marriage

The classics do not treat a pair of identical branches as either a combination or a clash: 巳 with 巳 stands apart as an "echo." So in marriage the rest decides: the elements of the stems, the Day Master, and how 巳 is placed in the pillars. A year 巳 in both charts speaks of origin: you have a similar family atmosphere. Often the parents in such pairs were people of one type, and you know without words "how things are done among us."

If 巳 also stands in the day pillars (the Spouse Palace 夫妻宮, fūqī gōng), you live inside the reflection every day. Here it is worth asking honestly: are we really happy because we are alike, or is it calm with this partner because they never surprise me? Fatigue with predictability is a typical difficulty for mirror pairs around the tenth year.

What helps: each person has a project or hobby that cannot be fully shared; an agreement to speak about unpleasant things aloud on a set day and hour instead of waiting for "the right moment"; the habit of praising out loud rather than silently. Two Snakes tend to underestimate how much the partner needs words, because they get by on hints themselves.

Friendship

The friendship of two Snakes is one of the steadiest. They do not demand daily meetings, value silence, and can go a month without calling and then talk as if they parted yesterday. A Snake friend rarely betrays: he or she knows the price of trust too well. The pair can bond over shared tastes: music, rare books, crafts, chess, collections.

The weak spot is competition. If both want the same prize (a position, the attention of a mutual friend), the friendship quickly turns cold. A simple rule helps: do not compete in the same category.

4 Work and business

Two Snakes in business bring precision, strategy and caution. They do not rush into adventures, know how to negotiate and keep their word. The ideal field is anything where analysis matters: research, consulting, design, financial planning, law.

The downside is shared as well: a lack of outward push. If both prefer to prepare and double-check, the project may never reach the market. You need either a third participant with Horse or Tiger energy or a firm agreement on launch dates. Another limitation is distrust of delegation: the Snake likes to control everything personally, and two Snakes sometimes turn this into endless mutual audits. Hand out the areas of responsibility and do not step into someone else's without an invitation.

5 Typical conflicts and how to ease them

• Silence instead of talking. Agree that if one stays silent for more than a day, the other asks exactly one question, "What happened?", and gets an answer.
• Sharing control. Write down who is responsible for what. Snakes hate uncertainty, and in a shared household it is unavoidable until the roles are written.
• Jealousy and possessiveness. This is a sign of deep attachments. If both lean towards jealousy, discuss it in advance and do not wait for an occasion.
• Identical blind spots. Neither will notice what neither notices. A good method is to invite an outsider to read a difficult decision.

6 The pair in 2027, the year of the Goat

The year 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat, begins with 立春 (lì chūn, the Start of Spring), around 4 February 2027. For both Snakes it connects to the year branch 未 through the Directional Combination 三會 巳午未 (sān huì, the "triple meeting"): the three summer branches, Snake, Horse and Goat, together give Fire. In the year layer, each Snake already holds two thirds: 巳 and 未. 午 is missing.

The calendar brings the third branch. The fifth month of 2027, 丙午 (about 6 June to 6 July), is the Horse. In this window the triple closes for both Snakes at once, because they are identical. A Directional Combination is considered stronger than an ordinary union, since it gathers a whole season of one element. For the pair, Fire in June 2027 is doubled: strong energy, activity, emotion, a wish to act, but also overheating. Two Snakes receive the very element they already resemble too much in.

The neighbouring months are noticeable as well. 乙巳 (about 6 May to 5 June) repeats the Snake branch once more and strengthens the "echo." 丁未 (about 7 July to 7 August) matches the year branch. In 戊申 (about 8 August to 7 September) the Monkey arrives, and the 巳申 link fires for both Snakes simultaneously: a combination, a destruction, and two of the three branches of the punishment 寅巳申. In that month it is easy to agree on something together and just as easy to part ways in interpreting it later, so write agreements down. 己酉 (about 8 September to 7 October) is gentler: the Rooster with each Snake gives two of the three branches of the Metal Three Harmony 巳酉丑, a time for calculations and order in money and paperwork. In 辛亥 (about 7 November to 6 December) the Pig clashes with the Snake (巳亥冲), and this tension falls on both at once. With identical branches, nobody can be the "cushion" for the other in those weeks, so rest in advance and not after the quarrel. Month boundaries are approximate, give or take a day, and this is the backdrop of the year and not guaranteed events. The practical conclusion is simple: cool things down in summer. Avoid big decisions in the heat of emotion, and add rest, water, sleep and cool rituals of conversation.

7 Why the year sign is only the top layer

Two people of one sign may share almost nothing else. The year is one of four pillars, and character and daily life are shaped by the Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ), the month and the hour. Two Snakes with 甲 and 己 Day Masters form the combination 甲己合 and draw closer; two Snakes with 甲 and 庚 Day Masters are in control, and the "mirror" turns into an argument.

For a pair, five layers are checked on the charts: the Day Masters, the day branches (the Spouse Palaces), elemental balance, the relationship stars and the alignment of the ten-year Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn). If the charts contain other branches (for example 申 in one and 亥 in the other), the overall picture can change more than the Snake itself changes it. 8 One branch, different stems: what pairs of Snakes look like

The branch 巳 repeats every twelve years, while the stem of the year changes. So "two Snakes" can be very different. Here are recent Snake years:

Remember that the BaZi year begins around 4 February (立春), so people born in January belong to the previous year. A mother born in 1977 (丁巳) and a daughter born in 1989 (己巳) are Fire feeding Earth: the mother's stem produces the daughter's. The pair of 1989 and 2001 (己巳 and 辛巳) is Earth feeding Metal. But 1965 and 2001 (乙巳 and 辛巳) clash by stems: 乙 and 辛 stand against each other in the classics. The branch is the same for all of them, yet the "melody" of each pair is entirely different.

So when someone tells you "you are both Snakes, so everything is alike," check at least the stem of the year. It does not replace the Day Master, but it already shows how the two ancestral pillars sit relative to each other.

The mirror pair and age

Two Snakes of the same age more often meet at school, at work, in one circle. They grew up in the same realities, watch the same films and speak the same language. A twelve-year gap is a different story: a generation lies between them, but the "year imprint" is identical. Such a pair is often seen as mentor and student or elder and younger, and with the same branch they find a common language strangely easily. In a long relationship the main thing is not to slip into the role of "educator" and not to end up as the one who is led.

What other branches in the charts change

Two Snakes by year rarely stay limited to that branch: the other pillars of each contain their own signs, and they come into play. A few typical situations follow.

• One chart has 申 (Monkey). The 巳申 link appears: a Six Harmony 六合, the punishment from the triple 寅巳申, and a destruction 六破 at once. This mix makes the relationship tense and magnetic. The second Snake adds one more 巳 to the link, so the contact points number two.
• One chart has 亥 (Pig). The clash 巳亥冲: Fire and Water head-on. If the second Snake is calmer, it often takes the role of lightning rod.
• The charts hold 酉 and 丑. With the Snake this is the Metal Three Harmony 巳酉丑 (Snake, Rooster, Ox). Two of the three (say 巳 and 酉) make an incomplete "half" combination 半合: weaker, but already pulling towards Metal: discipline, boundaries, money. Such pairs are usually pragmatic and hold on to each other.
• One chart has 午 or 未. A second branch of the Directional Combination 巳午未 joins the two Snakes. If both are present, the combination is complete, and 2027 is not a guest for the pair but a confirmation of a theme already there.

All of this can be determined only from full charts. Other branches cannot be seen from the year sign, so the "echo" of two Snakes is merely the start of the conversation.

A tip for each of the two Snakes

When both partners share a sign, the advice "be gentler" does not work: each is sure they already are. So make the tips concrete. To the first Snake: say "I felt hurt when..." instead of silently striking the person off your circle of trust. To the second Snake: do not check on your partner through third parties; ask them directly. To both: take up a shared activity in which you are both beginners (dancing, a language, a hike, a workshop) so you learn to be imperfect next to each other. Two Snakes who can make mistakes together and laugh about it get the most durable version of the mirror pair.
