"We're 78% compatible" is not how BaZi measures a couple. The system has no single number. It has several layers of interaction between two charts, and a pair can shine on one layer while feeling strained on another. Comparing birth-year animals touches only the outermost of those layers, so treat everything below as background, not a verdict.

Picture a kitchen where two Roosters are laying out breakfast. On one side of the plate the spoon sits at a precise angle; on the other it lies differently, and both people notice at the same moment. One says nothing and the other moves the spoon. A minute later the first one moves it back. From outside it looks trivial. From inside it is a quiet negotiation over whose version of order counts as the right one. Scenes like this are what people usually describe when they ask about a Rooster–Rooster pair.

In BaZi the Rooster is the earthly branch 酉 (yǒu), Yin Metal, the middle of autumn and the sunset hour from 5 to 7 pm. When both partners share the same birth-year branch, the classics call it 伏吟 (fú yín, "hidden moan"; modern practitioners simply say "mirror"): the same energy meeting itself. For 酉 there is one more feature. It belongs to the short list of branches that carry self-punishment, 自刑 (zì xíng). That is the main thing separating this pairing from other "same-sign" couples, and we come back to it below.

One caveat before going further. Here we compare only the year branches, which is a single character out of the eight in each person's chart. This describes the background of a couple, not its fate. The real picture comes from two full charts, and the last section lists the checks that requires.

1 What the classics say about 酉 and 酉

The first link found in this pairing is 伏吟. As a term it is neutral: it does not say "good" or "bad", it says "repetition". Repetition amplifies whatever the branch already contains. If a Rooster has a taste for precision, the couple's precision doubles. If a Rooster tends toward fault-finding, that doubles too.

The second link is the self-punishment 自刑 酉酉. The traditional texts, including the Sānmìng Tōnghuì (三命通會), list four branches that can punish themselves: 辰辰, 午午, 酉酉 and 亥亥. The idea is that the energy finds no outlet and turns back on its bearer. In 酉 it looks like perfectionism: a person sets the bar so high that they cannot clear it themselves, then quietly blames themselves for it. In a couple of two Roosters, that self-punishment can leak outward, and strictness toward oneself becomes strictness toward the partner.

It is worth saying what is absent. There is no Six Harmony 六合 (liù hé), no clash 六冲 (liù chōng) and no Three Harmony 三合 (sān hé). The 酉酉 pairing stands on its own: no friendly pull and no head-on collision. That is why the elements and the other pillars of the chart decide far more than this one link.

2 The element: one and the same Yin Metal

Both partners have the branch 酉, and its only hidden stem is 辛 (xīn), pure Yin Metal. There is nothing "extra" inside, unlike 戌 or 未, which each hide three stems. This is why 酉 is counted among the cleanest branches: what you see outside is what is inside.

Two identical elements neither generate nor control each other; they stand side by side. In practice this is read as the relationship BaZi calls Friend (比肩, bǐ jiān): equals with similar habits and the feeling of being understood without explanation. The reverse side of that kinship is rivalry over territory and the last word.

What the shared 辛 givesWhat it takes away
Matching taste in clothes, food, interiors and manner of speakingNo lever: nobody balances the other with a different element
Respect for quality and deadlines, mutual tidinessA shared blind spot: neither likes to admit a mistake first
Quick understanding without long explanationsJudging "how it should be done" turns into an exam for each other
Restraint at home: fewer scenes than in a flamboyant pairGrievances pile up silently and arrive as one package

3 Love and marriage

At the beginning these couples often look "put together". Both take care of themselves, both are punctual, both value beauty, but without show: Yin Metal likes fine cutting, not glitter. Many people say that next to another Rooster there is no need to choose words or explain why a shirt should be ironed.

Trouble arrives not through quarrels but through evaluation. If one partner is used to correcting the world, the other feels corrected and wants to correct someone in return. The classical image is "metal cuts metal": sharp edges meet and go blunt. The self-punishment adds a second layer. Each person expects flawlessness from themselves in advance and reacts painfully to any remark that sounded like a reproach.

What helps. First, an agreement about a "neutral zone": a list of small things on which you do not comment on each other, such as the order of the shelf, the way the dishwasher is loaded, or the choice of route. Second, the habit of praising out loud. This is not obvious to a Rooster, who treats the good as a given and notices only the deviations. Third, a shared project pointed outward: a trip, a renovation, a child, a business. When there is a task and not only each other to look at, sharp edges start working for the result.

What to avoid: waiting for the partner to guess you are hurt. Both Roosters wait to be guessed, and neither speaks. This is the most common cause of cooling in such couples.

A word on household and money. Two Roosters usually keep a joint budget more carefully than other pairs: records, savings, clear categories. Conflict appears when each has a different idea of a "reasonable expense". One considers an expensive dinner at a good restaurant justified by its quality; the other sees waste. The conversation is calmer if each person first gets a personal sum that is never discussed, and the rest is planned together. That removes the commonest topic for silent judgments.

On intimacy the branches give no general answer, so we say only this much, from what practitioners observe: a pair of Roosters often needs an explicit occasion for tenderness, because both are reserved. Set small rituals for yourselves: evening tea without phones, a short note, a walk at the same hour. For Metal a ritual is more dependable than an impulse.

4 Friendship

In friendship, two 酉 branches make a comfortable combination. Neither claims leadership on every question, and common interests tend to form around craftsmanship: collecting, handwork, music, sports with clear rules. Rooster friends can sit silent side by side for an hour and feel no awkwardness.

The weak point of this friendship is envy of the other's polish. If one of them did something better, the other makes a mental note. Nothing is said aloud, but the distance grows. An honest conversation every few months helps: what works in our friendship, and what does not.

5 Work and business

As business partners, two Roosters can build a very clean process: procedures, reporting, quality control. Where a business demands precision, this is a strong pair. Typical fields include accounting and auditing, jewelry design and manufacture, editing and publishing, legal support, and premium-level service.

The risks are just as clear. First, perfectionism slows the launch. The product is "not ready yet" because either of the two can see how it could be better. Second, nobody says "enough, we ship". Third, neither enjoys risk, so the pair misses the moment when a bold move is needed. A good fix is to divide responsibilities in writing and to appoint an outside person, a mentor, a consultant, or a third partner of a different temperament, who has the right to interrupt endless polishing.

If you are choosing a partner for a joint venture, read also the article on business compatibility: it shows that for business the distribution of elements across the charts matters as much as the animal signs.

6 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them

"You did it wrong again." Criticism over details. The one-request rule works: instead of a judgment ("it's crooked") you state a request ("please set it straight"). A request leaves the person their dignity; a judgment does not.

The silent, wounded "everything's fine." This is self-punishment in action: the person punishes themselves for being hurt and punishes the partner with a lack of words. Agree on a short, neutral signal ("I need ten minutes, then I'll tell you") and keep your word.

The argument about what is "correct". It starts when both care about being right more than about the outcome. Ask: what do we need to get out of this? If the answer is the same, the method is secondary and either will do.

Comparison with outside models. Metal tends to judge against a standard. If you measure your partner against an imagined ideal, or against another couple on social media, the pair is doomed to chronic dissatisfaction. It is better once a month to write down what went well.

Public criticism. A particularly painful case is a remark made in front of other people. A Rooster who corrects the partner in front of friends or colleagues gets a week of silence in return. Agree that every correction is made in private, and that in public you are allies. This rule is not about politeness but about safety: Metal does not forgive being "trimmed" in front of an audience.

Competition over success. If both work in the same field, comparing achievements becomes the background of the relationship. One gets promoted and something tightens inside the other. Name it aloud once and turn it into a shared goal: decide together where each of you wants to be in three years.

7 A Rooster–Rooster couple in 2027

2027 is the year 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat, and it begins around February 4 with Start of Spring 立春 (lì chūn). The Rooster 酉 has no direct classical link with the year branch 未, so the couple meets it with no combination, no clash and no harm from the year branch. For both partners the year is neutral by branches. This means the tempo will be set not by the sign but by life circumstances and by your major luck periods.

Now the elements. The upper stem of the year, 丁, is Yin Fire, and in the controlling cycle Fire presses on Metal. The branch 未 is Earth, and Earth feeds Metal, so the pressure of the fire is softened by the earth under it. For a Rooster this is more a year of "working heat": many tasks where you have to show a result. For people whose Day Master is 辛, the fire of the year plays a special role, but that can only be discussed from a full chart.

Month by month, the pair has several noticeable points. Use the dates with an allowance of about a day.

Month in 2027BranchLink with 酉How to read it
March 6 – April 4卯卯酉冲 (mǎo-yǒu chōng, clash)A tense month: decisions come sharper than necessary
April 5 – May 5辰辰酉合 (chén-yǒu hé, Six Harmony)A softer period, good for agreeing on plans
September 8 – October 7酉伏吟 and 自刑Every "mirror" theme is amplified; better not to sum things up in an argument
October 8 – November 6戌酉戌害 (yǒu-xū hài, harm)Irritation over small things, possible things left unsaid

This is general background, not a schedule of events. Months work like weather: in a "windy" month an umbrella does not guarantee rain, but it does no harm either.

A few words on how two Roosters can get through the tense months with fewer losses. In March (癸卯), when the month branch 卯 clashes with your branch (卯酉冲), both of you become sharper-tongued, and any small carelessness is read as a challenge. Agree on a rule for that month: "we don't settle things at night". Most sharp conversations lose half their heat by morning. In September (己酉), the month that doubles 酉, self-criticism grows, so watch that it does not spill into nitpicking at the partner. And calm April (甲辰), with its Six Harmony 辰酉合, is the best window of the year to discuss big plans and to make up for whatever piled up in the spring.

8 Why the year sign is only the top layer

The year branch in BaZi is the pillar of ancestors and outer image. The real character, and the way a person loves and quarrels, is set by the Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ), the stem of the day of birth. Among two people born in a Rooster year there may be one with a Day Master of 甲 (big Wood, direct and stubborn) and another with 癸 (quiet Water, flexible and impressionable). Those are two entirely different couples, even though in everyday language both are called "Rooster".

A real compatibility assessment rests on five checks, and every one requires full charts: date, time and place of birth.

1. Day Masters: feeding, control, stem combination. 2. Day branches, the Spouse Palaces 夫妻宮 (fū qī gōng): combinations, clashes, punishments. 3. Elemental balance: who heals whom. 4. Relationship stars. 5. Synchronicity of the Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn) over the coming years. No compatibility percentage comes out of this, and that is as it should be: what you get is a map of the couple that shows its supports and its thin places. A detailed walkthrough of the method is in the compatibility guide, and the difference between a "sign" and a real chart is covered in the truth about the Chinese zodiac.

Frequently asked questions

Is two Roosters a bad match?

No. It is a neutral pair with two particular features: the "mirror" 伏吟 and the self-punishment 酉酉. There are no direct clashes or harms between the branches. Difficulties usually come not from hostility but from a shared habit of criticism and silent resentment.

What is 自刑 and why is it discussed specifically for the Rooster?

It is "self-punishment": a branch paired with itself finds no outlet and turns inward. The classics name four such branches: 辰, 午, 酉 and 亥. In the Rooster it shows up as perfectionism and excessive self-criticism.

What will happen to a Rooster couple in 2027?

The year 丁未 creates no direct link with the Rooster 酉, so the year branch is neutral. Individual months will stand out more: March (卯酉冲) and September (the "mirror"). This is general background; what actually happens depends on the full charts.

Can a couple be judged by birth-year signs alone?

You can get only a general impression. The year sign is one of four branches in each chart. The Day Master, the day branches and the luck periods often change the picture completely.

Should two Roosters run a business together?

For precise, regulated work the combination is strong. Watch the perfectionism, split the roles in writing, and bring in a third person who can say "stop polishing".
