"We're 78% compatible" is not how BaZi measures a couple. The system has no single number. It has several layers of interaction between two charts, and a pair can be brilliant on one layer and strained on another. Birth-year animals are only the outermost layer, so treat what follows as background rather than a verdict.

Some couples make their friends say, "It's odd that they're together, but it works." The Rooster is a person of exact wording who remembers who promised what and when. The Pig is a person of the generous gesture who gives away the last of it and does not write down to whom. They can argue for years about the right way to slice bread, and both are still sure that the person next to them is exactly the one they need. In BaZi terms, such couples are most often linked not by branches but by elements.

The branches 酉 (yǒu, the Rooster) and 亥 (hài, the Pig) never appear together in the table of classical links. There is no Six Harmony 六合, no clash 六冲, no harm 六害, no destruction 六破 and no punishment 三刑. By comparison, most other pairs have at least one entry. This is called a neutral combination: the branches do not act on each other directly, so the character of the couple is set by other layers of the chart. Among the hints available at the level of signs, the main one remains the interaction of elements: Metal (酉) generates Water (亥).

Before reading on, the limits once more. We are comparing one character out of eight in each person's chart, the birth-year branch. The result is a general background, not a description of a specific couple. What actually decides the outcome is covered in the last section.

1 A neutral pair: what it means in practice

The absence of a link does not mean "neutral in quality". It means only that the chart holds no ready-made scenario that switches on automatically. There is no attraction as with 午未, and no friction as with 子午. The couple has more freedom: it is assembled from characters and decisions, not from a "program of branches". For some people that is a relief, for others it is unsettling, because there is no support to point to.

Practitioners who look at many couples notice a pattern: neutral pairs most often depend on three things. The Day Masters (how well they suit each other), the elements each person lacks, and whether the luck periods coincide. The year sign offers nothing decisive here.

2 Metal generates Water

The Rooster 酉 is Yin Metal, with the single hidden stem 辛. The Pig 亥 is Yin Water by branch but Yang in its action: its main hidden stem is 壬 (big, flowing Water) and the second is 甲 (Wood). In the generating cycle Metal comes before Water: 金生水 (jīn shēng shuǐ). The image from the classics is that metal cools, condenses moisture and feeds the spring. In human terms the Rooster supplies structure and the Pig supplies content.

One curious detail: the 辛 in the Rooster and the 壬 in the Pig are directly linked by generation. This is one of those cases where the combination in the hidden stems is supportive, and it is at this level that such a couple feels "we understand each other". But the support runs one way: Metal gives, Water receives. In life the Rooster more often turns out to be the one who organizes, explains and leads, while the Pig is the one who trusts, relaxes and enjoys. Without attention to this imbalance, the Rooster tires over time.

3 Love: who teaches whom

The Pig often attracts the Rooster by its spontaneity: it does not nitpick, it knows how to enjoy small things and does not demand perfection. A Rooster used to being strict with itself feels at ease beside such a Pig. In the other direction the attraction works through respect: the Pig sees in the Rooster a person who keeps their word and can bring order into a life.

Tension arises where "broad" meets "exact". The Pig may forget an agreement, not out of indifference but because its attention was taken by other, warmer circumstances. The Rooster takes it as disrespect and makes a remark. The Pig is upset and retreats into hurt, which in a Pig is deep and long, like water in a pool. What is needed here is an agreement about form: the Rooster asks to be reminded beforehand and promises not to judge; the Pig keeps its word on what matters and admits that in daily life it needs help.

Another place where couples stumble is money. The Pig is ready to spend on people and pleasures, and the Rooster counts. A separate personal budget plus a shared one for big goals works well. Then generosity is not read as waste, and precision is not read as stinginess.

4 Friendship and family

A friendship between a Rooster and a Pig is seldom noisy but often long. The Pig knows how to listen, the Rooster knows how to give an honest opinion. It is a good pair for "kitchen-table talks": something difficult can be discussed and heard without hurtful phrasing. In a family, for example as parent and child, the Rooster risks becoming too demanding a figure and the Pig too indulgent. It helps to agree on rules so that children do not get opposite signals.

5 Work and business

As a business combination it is productive when roles are divided. The Rooster is responsible for processes, records and quality; the Pig for client relations, negotiation and the atmosphere in the team. Strong directions include restaurants and hospitality, consulting, education, creative studios with careful organization, and retail where customer affection and a tidy warehouse both matter.

The risks: the Pig may trust doubtful people too readily, and the Rooster may be too wary of anything new. The safeguard is obvious: the Rooster checks every contract, and the Pig approves every dealing with the team. For choosing a business partner, see our article on business compatibility, where year signs are only a first step.

6 How to build daily life so the branches don't interfere

Since there are no strong links, daily life can be arranged in an adult way, without looking over one's shoulder at "fate". Here are three practices suggested to couples with this combination.

First: divide the household zones. Give the Rooster whatever needs a system (documents, payments, schedules, shopping) and the Pig whatever needs warmth (guests, gifts, relations with relatives, meals). Neither should feel they are working in someone else's element.

Second: the rhythm of rest. The Pig needs water, literally: a bath, the sea, a shower, rivers, lakes. The Rooster needs quiet and order. Plan holidays so that both are present: a calm place by the water and a clear daily routine without rush. That way nobody sacrifices their rest for the other.

Third: a short weekly "how are we" conversation. Not a review of grievances, just ten minutes: what went well, what you would like to change. A neutral pair has no built-in coupling mechanism, and such a conversation takes its place.

If you already have children, keep in mind that the Pig is used to permitting and the Rooster is used to demanding. Work out common rules in advance, and discuss disagreements in private. Children are quick to catch the difference and to use it.

7 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them

"You forgot again." The Pig's forgetfulness against the Rooster's memory. The fix: a shared calendar, reminders, and the Rooster's right to remind once without reproach.

"You're picking on me." The Rooster's criticism hurts the Pig more than it seems. The fix: the rule "first say what worked, then what to correct".

"You don't trust me." Control on the Rooster's side. The fix: separate where control is needed (money, documents, deadlines) from where to let go (personal affairs, rest).

Silent depth. The Pig can withdraw into itself for a long time, and the Rooster will decide that it is displeasure. Ask directly: "are you tired, or are you angry with me?" A simple question saves days of tension.

A separate case is a difference in attitude to the future. The Pig tends to trust the current: "it will work out somehow". The Rooster likes a plan a year ahead. The two positions can be combined if the Rooster plans the frame (budget, deadlines, main milestones) and the Pig fills it with content. It is good to have one "big" shared project for several years: buying a home, studies, a business. It builds a common trajectory and shows that caution and generosity are needed equally.

One more subtlety: in hard periods the Pig goes into depth and the Rooster goes into work. Each feels the other has pulled away. Tell each other in advance: "when I'm struggling I'll be quiet, but it isn't about you." That agreement is worth many conversations.

8 The pair in 2027

2027 is the year 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat, beginning around February 4 (立春, Start of Spring). For the Rooster 酉 there are no direct links with the branch 未. For the Pig 亥 there is a Three Harmony 三合 亥卯未: the Pig and the Goat form an incomplete Wood trio, which needs the Rabbit 卯 to be complete. The general background is more favorable for the Pig and neutral for the Rooster. Details are in the forecasts for the Pig and for the Rooster.

Note the elemental point: the Wood of the year (亥卯未) belongs neither to Metal nor to Water, but Water (亥) feeds it and Metal (酉) controls it. In everyday translation: this year the Pig feels a surge of opportunities, while the Rooster beside it takes the role of the person who structures them.

Months of the year that carry special links (dates approximate, ±1 day):

MonthBranchFor the RoosterFor the Pig
February 4 – March 5寅no link寅亥合 (Six Harmony)
March 6 – April 4卯卯酉冲 (clash)full trio 亥卯未 with the year
May 6 – June 5巳巳酉 (half of the trio)巳亥冲 (clash)
August 8 – September 7申申酉 (half of the 申酉戌 combination)申亥害 (harm)
September 8 – October 7酉伏吟 and 自刑no link

March is good for the Pig and tense for the Rooster, and it is worth knowing that in advance. In that month the Pig may be more decisive and more generous with proposals, while the Rooster is more irritable. Do not make sharp decisions on the very first evening of a quarrel.

A caveat: this is background, not a schedule of events. Monthly links work as conditions, not as a verdict.

Finally, a practical orientation for 2027. If you are planning a big joint decision (buying a home, registering a marriage, launching a business), March and early April are easier for the Pig, and the Rooster needs to be patient at that time. If you feel the decision is ripe but the Rooster is in a "nervous" month, move the discussion to April, when the month 辰 gives the Rooster a Six Harmony 辰酉. This move does not require belief in the branches; it only takes into account that people have months of different well-being.

If you want to test how far the sign works in your own case, ask yourself what you most expect from your partner: order or warmth? The Rooster usually expects the first and the Pig the second, and each is surprised that the other finds "this is not enough". Name your expectations aloud and you will learn where your roles really match your elements and where you are playing someone else's.

It helps to understand how Metal and Water share daily life in practice. The Rooster holds the form: the schedule, order in the papers, clean agreements. The Pig holds the atmosphere: whom to invite, how not to offend relatives, when to give yourself and others some slack. Trouble begins when each considers only their own contribution important: the Rooster calls the Pig's care "sloppiness", and the Pig calls the Rooster's order "pedantry". The remedy is simple and tested: once a week a short conversation in which each names one thing they are grateful for in the other. For Metal it is a way to soften; for Water it is a way to feel supported. In the year 丁未, when opportunities grow for the Pig and the Rooster beside it gives them form, this habit is especially fitting: it turns a difference of temperament into a working division of labor.

9 What a full chart will show

We have covered the top layer. In each partner's BaZi chart there are four pillars and eight characters. The decisive ones are the Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ) and the day branch, which is called the Spouse Palace 夫妻宮 (fū qī gōng). Two people of the same year sign can have entirely different Spouse Palaces, and then instead of a neutral pair you get a Six Harmony 六合 or, on the contrary, a clash.

A couple is checked in five steps: Day Masters, day branches, elemental balance, relationship stars and luck periods. You need the date, time and place of birth of both people. The result is not a number but a description: where the couple has supports and where work will be needed. The order and method are in the guide; for how to recognize "the wrong person", see the article on how to tell someone is not your person.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Rooster and the Pig compatible?

There are no direct classical links between the branches, so the pair is neutral. The only hint at the level of signs is that Metal generates Water. Whether the pair really suits can be seen only from full charts.

What does a "neutral pair" mean in BaZi?

It is a combination with no entries in the tables of harmonies, clashes, harms, destructions and punishments. The scenario of the pair is not set in advance by the branches, so the Day Masters, the elemental balance and the luck periods become decisive.

Who leads in a Rooster and Pig pair?

The tendency is that the Rooster structures and the Pig fills in. But roles are set by the particular charts, not by the year sign. It is better to agree on the division of roles explicitly.

What will 2027 bring this pair?

For the Pig the year is favorable by branches (the incomplete trio 亥卯未), for the Rooster it is neutral. In March the Rooster meets the month 卯 while the Pig gets a full trio. This is general background, not a prediction.

Can compatibility by birth year be trusted?

As a first orientation, yes. You should not base decisions about marriage or business on it. The year sign is one of four branches; date, time and place give the full picture.
