"We're 78% compatible" is not how BaZi works. The system has no single number. It has several layers of interaction between two charts, and a couple can be brilliant on one layer and strained on another. Comparing birth-year animals is the outermost layer only, so read what follows as background.

In a popular horoscope the Rooster and the Dog often earn a reputation as "eternal arguers": one notices and comments on everything, the other worries and grumbles. Read through the branches, the picture is more interesting and less clear-cut. 酉 (yǒu, the Rooster) and 戌 (xū, the Dog) are neighbors: in the row of twelve they stand one after the other, with 酉 tenth and 戌 eleventh. Both belong to autumn, both are friendly with Metal, and in the calendar there is no gap of several months between them, as there is for most other pairs.

At the same time, the table of classical branch links has an entry for them: 六害 (liù hài, the "six harms"), specifically 酉戌. Not a clash, not a punishment, but a harm, a quiet damage. There is also a softening entry: both branches take part in the seasonal Directional Combination 三會 (sān huì) 申酉戌 (autumn, Metal), although in this pair one of the three branches, 申, is missing. Let us look at what comes of it in everyday life.

A reminder of the limits of the method. Only the year branches are compared here, one character out of eight in each person's chart. It is a surface layer and a background, not a sentence passed on the couple. A real judgment is made from full charts.

1 Two branches of one season

In BaZi autumn is divided into three months by branch: 申 (Monkey, early autumn), 酉 (Rooster, mid-autumn) and 戌 (Dog, late autumn). The element of the season is Metal, but 戌, at its end, is already Earth, the branch that "gathers in" autumn and prepares the move into winter. That is why the Dog has a double character: by branch it is Yang Earth, by season it is autumnal, and among its hidden stems it keeps both Metal and Fire.

The hidden stems of 戌 are 戊 (the main one, Yang Earth), 辛 (Yin Metal) and 丁 (Yin Fire). The only hidden stem of 酉 is 辛. In other words, the Rooster is made entirely of what sits in the middle of the Dog. This is one of the reasons such a pair so often finds a common language of taste and values: both respect order, cleanliness and discipline, and both answer for what they have taken on.

2 What 害 is, and why it is not enmity

Among the links between branches, harm 害 (hài) is counted the mildest of the "bad" ones. The classical texts explain it like this: the six harms arise as the "reverse side" of the six harmonies. A harm sits where one partner of a harmony is drawn off by a neighboring branch. For 酉 the harmony partner is 辰 (辰酉合), and 戌 is precisely the branch that interferes and upsets that union through the clash 辰戌. Hence the name of the link: 酉 and 戌 seem to damage each other through a third party, not directly.

That is why the expressions of harm are usually quiet. They are things left unsaid, disappointment of the "I did my best for you and you didn't notice" kind, suspicions of insincerity, and hurt over a trifle that resurfaces a month later. For more, see the section on harm in the article on the six harms 害. The practical consequence is simple: a Rooster and a Dog do better when they say aloud what would normally "go without saying".

3 Earth feeds Metal

Now the elements. Earth generates Metal, which is one link of the generating cycle 木→火→土→金→水 (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). The branch 戌 (Earth) stands in the "mother" position to 酉 (Metal). This softens the sharpness of the harm: in everyday terms the Dog tends to care, support and provide, while the Rooster accepts that care and turns it into results. In many families it is arranged just so, one person securing the rear and the other supplying quality and form.

But the "nourishing" role can be tiring. A Dog used to giving starts to expect recognition, while a Rooster used to receiving does not always voice it. That is where the harm gets to work: resentment without words. This is why one simple thing matters in this pair: say thanks out loud instead of implying it.

AreaWhat comes from the Dog 戌What comes from the Rooster 酉
HomeWarmth, protection, responsibility for loved onesOrder, aesthetics, clear rules
MoneyCaution, a reserve for a rainy dayRecords, precision, control of expenses
ConflictAnxiety, suspicion, the blunt wordCriticism, remarks, cold politeness
Weak spotAccumulated hurt, waiting for recognitionDetachment, judging instead of supporting

4 Love and marriage

As a romantic pair this combination often looks like an "adult union": both take commitments seriously and rarely make abrupt moves. The Dog brings loyalty and readiness to protect; the Rooster brings taste and the knack of turning an apartment into a cozy, beautiful place. Couples where it works out usually rest on a division of roles that both consider fair.

Tension gathers around trust. The Dog (戌) checks by nature. It may interrogate without meaning to: where were you, who were you with, why didn't you call. The Rooster (酉) takes this as control and closes up, and the closing up sets off a new wave of anxiety in the Dog. It is a classic closed circle, and the harm 酉戌 describes precisely this mechanism: damage from mistrust, not from open aggression.

What to do. Agree on predictability: if the Rooster will be late, he or she writes beforehand; if the Dog is anxious, the Dog calls the anxiety anxiety, not an accusation. This single skill often removes half the quarrels. The second skill is to name each other's strengths on concrete occasions: "you handled the bank brilliantly yesterday", "thank you for waiting".

5 Friendship and family

In friendship the pair works well: adjacent branches speak a close language, and the harm is less noticeable because there is no daily closeness. The Dog acts as dependable backup, the Rooster as the one who suggests how to organize things. Among relatives this tandem can become a "second parent": the Dog as guardian, the Rooster as keeper of discipline. If one of them is the child and the other the parent, take care that care does not turn into pressure.

6 Work and business

The Rooster and the Dog make a useful business combination when control and honesty are needed. The Dog handles ethical boundaries and risk checks; the Rooster handles standards and deadlines. Legal services, finance, education, medical administration and any field where reputation counts go well.

The pitfalls: the Dog is inclined to play it safe, the Rooster is inclined to criticize, and the result can be an endless audit. A rule of separation helps: each partner owns an area the other does not enter without being asked, and once a month there is a short "what is getting in the way" meeting. 7 Words that take the harm out

Because the harm 害 lives in the territory of things unsaid, the best remedy for it is practical: concrete phrases that you agree in advance to use. Here are several that have held up in consultations.

For the Rooster: "I like how you did this", "I noticed that you tried", "Let's look together at what can be improved". Three phrases that turn evaluation into cooperation.

For the Dog: "I'm anxious, and that is mine, not yours", "Please tell me how your day went", "I need to know when you'll be home so I don't worry". Instead of an interrogation, the Dog names its own need.

For both: "Let's come back to this in an hour." A pause in an argument is especially useful for two autumn branches, whose sharp words sink deep and are remembered for years. After an hour the arguments are still there, but the edge is gone.

Children in such a pair usually get a double lesson: order from the Rooster and loyalty from the Dog. Just watch that the Dog's anxiety and the Rooster's exactingness do not merge into pressure. A child needs to hear "you can do it" more often than "be careful".

8 Typical conflicts and ways to defuse them

"You don't trust me." The source is the Dog's questions. The fix is the predictability and openness described above: don't justify yourself, briefly report your plans.

"You're always dissatisfied." The source is the Rooster's remarks. The fix is to mark what was done first and ask for a correction second. Two sentences in that order change the tone of the conversation.

"I did so much and you didn't appreciate it." The source is harm as accumulated hurt. The fix is a regular talk about each person's contribution, ideally once a month and not at the moment of crisis.

Silence after a quarrel. The Rooster withdraws, the Dog seeks contact. Agree on who takes the first step, and keep to that rule until it becomes a habit.

A separate topic is moving and change. The Dog 戌 has a sense of "its own territory", and any change at home hurts it more than it hurts the Rooster. The Rooster, on the contrary, tends to change surroundings for the sake of improvement. If you are planning a move, a renovation or a new job, discuss it ahead of time and give the Dog time to get used to the idea: two or three conversations instead of one ultimatum. It helps the Rooster to remember that stability for the Dog is not boredom but a form of safety.

One last household point: shared holidays and traditions. This pair gains from recurring rituals such as a birthday, an anniversary, Sunday lunch at the parents'. For the Dog a ritual confirms "we are together"; for the Rooster it sets a handsome frame. Anchors like these work directly against the mistrust that feeds the harm.

9 The pair in 2027

2027 is the year 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat, beginning around February 4 (立春, Start of Spring). For the Rooster 酉 and the branch 未 there are no direct links, so the year is neutral. For the Dog 戌 the situation is different: 戌 and 未 form a destruction 破 (pò, 戌未), and together with 丑 they make up the punishment trio 三刑 (sān xíng) 丑戌未, the "ungrateful punishment". This year the Dog may feel inner pressure: a rethinking of agreements, distrust of its own decisions, roughness with those close to it. More in the forecast for the Dog.

For the pair this means the main source of "noise" lies in the Dog, while the Rooster is a steady figure alongside. If the Rooster can avoid taking the flare-ups personally and avoids adding criticism, the couple passes the year without losses. If both react sharply, the harm 酉戌 joins forces with the pressure of the year.

Noticeable months of 2027 (dates approximate, ±1 day):

MonthBranchFor the RoosterFor the Dog
March 6 – April 4卯卯酉冲 (clash)卯戌合 (Six Harmony)
April 5 – May 5辰辰酉合 (Six Harmony)辰戌冲 (clash)
July 7 – August 7未no link戌未破 and 刑
September 8 – October 7酉伏吟 and 自刑酉戌害
October 8 – November 6戌酉戌害伏吟

In March and April the partners find themselves in mirrored positions: one has tension and the other has support, then the reverse. Use that: in the month that is "quiet" for one, let that person do the pulling.

One more practical layer concerns home and daily life. In autumn (申酉戌) both branches are in their native element, and the pair usually gains energy for household matters: renovation, sorting belongings, putting documents in order. It is a good time to close together what has long been postponed. July (丁未), however, when 破 and 刑 fall on the Dog, is better kept as a lighter month: do not start moves, do not sign anything large, do not sort out old grievances. In that month it helps the Rooster to take on more of the domestic questions so that the Dog has fewer reasons for inner tension. This arrangement does not require belief in the branches; it simply spreads the load by season.

If you are already a couple and want to see how visible the 酉戌 harm is in your own case, look at two signs. First: do you have quarrels "from the accumulated", where the pretext is tiny but everything is said at once? Second: are there topics you both try to avoid? If both signs are there, the branches are probably showing up, and the practice of "words aloud" will bring a noticeable result. If not, other layers of the chart are compensating for the harm, and the year sign does not work as a prediction for you.

10 Why the birth year is only the top layer

The year branch describes the frame of the family line and the outer image, while character and the manner of loving are set by the Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ) and the day branch. A Rooster with the Day Master 壬 (big Water, freedom-loving) and a Dog with the Day Master 己 (soft Earth, caring) will make a pair unlike a Rooster with 丁 and a Dog with 戊.

That is why a professional checks five things from full charts: the Day Masters; the day branches (the Spouse Palaces 夫妻宮); the balance of elements; the relationship stars; and the overlap of Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn). No single "percentage" comes out of this, but a map of the couple does. We described the method in the compatibility guide, and you can read how to interpret hidden stems in the article on hidden stems 藏干.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Rooster and the Dog compatible?

By year signs this is a mixed signal: Earth 戌 feeds Metal 酉, but a harm 六害 stands between the branches. A proper assessment needs full charts; the year branches give only the background.

What does 害 between 酉 and 戌 mean?

It is a mild link of mistrust and hidden hurt, not an open clash. The classics explain it as the disruption of the 辰酉 harmony through the clash 辰戌. In daily life it shows as things left unsaid and accumulated grievances.

What is the 三會 申酉戌, and does this pair have it?

It is the seasonal Directional Combination of autumn: Monkey, Rooster and Dog. The pair holds two of the three branches, so the combination is incomplete. It gives a shared autumnal, "metal" mood but not a full union.

How does 2027 affect this pair?

For the Rooster the year is neutral, while the Dog falls under the destruction 戌未 and the punishment 丑戌未. The main pressure lands on the Dog; it helps the Rooster not to add criticism. This is the general background of the year, not a prediction of events.

Who in the pair usually gives way?

The year signs do not answer that. Roles are set by the Day Masters and the elemental balance of the particular people. The signs show only a tendency: the Dog more often takes on care, and the Rooster more often sets the standard.
