In any compatibility table the Rat and Tiger pair makes you want to write something, and there is nothing to write. There is no Six Harmony 六合, no Three Harmony 三合, no clash 沖, no harm and no punishment. Astrologers call such pairs neutral, and by tradition it is in neutral pairs that the year sign says the least. That is neither bad nor good. It means the relationship is not built on a ready-made scheme but on what each of you brings yourself.

There is still one strong pointer, and it sits at the level of elements: 子 is Water, 寅 (yín) is Wood, and in the cycle of generation Water feeds Wood (水生木, shuǐ shēng mù). The classical image is spring rain and a young forest. In a pair it usually looks like this: the Rat gives the resource (an idea, information, support, money) and the Tiger grows and acts. Whether that is good depends on whether both of you notice the direction of the flow.

Below we look at the character of the bond, love, shared work, conflicts, and what the Goat year of 2027 (丁未, dīng-wèi) adds for people of these two signs. And, as always, remember that the year sign is one character out of eight.

1 What a "neutral pair" means in the language of branches

Between 子 and 寅 there is not one of the classical links: they do not form a Six Harmony 六合 (for the Rat that partner is the Ox 丑, for the Tiger the Pig 亥), they do not stand in one Three Harmony 三合 (the Rat has 申子辰, the Tiger 寅午戌), and they do not clash 沖 (the Rat's opposite is the Horse 午, the Tiger's is the Monkey 申). From the standpoint of the branch pair that means there is neither relief nor friction between you. You start with a blank sheet.

That brings a certain freedom. Pairs with a Six Harmony sometimes suffer from too strong a mutual pull, and pairs with a clash from constant sparks. Neutral pairs build relationships more slowly, but they also carry no heavy "ready scenarios." Their quality is defined by other layers of the chart: the Day Masters, the elemental balance, the day branches and the Luck Pillars.

That is why the gap between a "year sign" and "real compatibility" is especially telling for a neutral pair. If you and your partner are a Rat and a Tiger by year, and by day you have, say, 午 and 子, then at the Spouse Palace level a clash awaits you. If by day you have 卯 and 子, there is the rude punishment 子卯刑 (zǐ-mǎo xíng) at the palace level. If it is 亥 and 寅, there is a union and a destruction at once. The year sign will show none of this.

2 Water feeds Wood: who gives and who takes

The elemental link 水生木 sounds pleasant, but it has a flip side that is mentioned less often. In classical theory the "child" (the thing produced) draws strength from the "parent": Wood grows at the expense of Water, and Water gradually decreases. If the Water in the Rat's chart is already weak, the role of nourisher may be draining.

In life this looks concrete. The Tiger puts forward an ambitious project, the Rat finds the money and contacts and thinks through the legal scheme. The Tiger shines and the Rat stays "in the shade." As long as the Rat sees this as her own choice, everything is fine. When it turns into the habit of "well, you're able to," a tiredness appears that is not always visible from outside.

For the Tiger the opposite danger is getting used to the idea that the ground will always be underfoot. Wood without water dries out, and if the Rat one day says "I need something for myself," the Tiger may be at a loss. A wise pair talks the balance through in advance: what we share equally and what we do not.

Notice that the direction of the flow 水生木 is a tendency of signs, not a law of relationships. For a Tiger with strong Wood in the chart and an excess of Water, everything may be reversed: what he needs is not water but fire or metal, and then feeding from the Rat becomes an excess.

3 Love and marriage: a quick meeting, a slow closeness

The Tiger 寅 is the start of spring, Yang Wood with three hidden stems, 甲, 丙 and 戊 (Wood, Fire and Earth). It is a sign that moves forward and does not like to wait. The Rat 子 is more careful: first she watches, then decides. In love this yields a recognizable pattern. The Tiger takes a step, the Rat retreats half a step. The Tiger is surprised, the Rat explains that she needs time. If the Tiger can wait and the Rat can say "yes" out loud, the pair comes together.

The strong side of such a union is liveliness. Beside the Tiger the Rat becomes bolder, and beside the Rat the Tiger learns not to burn bridges. The weak side is a different demand for openness: the Tiger likes to speak loudly and directly, the Rat speaks in a roundabout way and expects to be understood. This breeds misunderstandings in which both are right, but in different languages.

In a marriage it helps from the very beginning to divide the zone of "strategic" decisions (where to live, how to raise children, what business to pursue) from the zone of "daily" ones. In the first, the Tiger proposes and the Rat checks; in the second, the Rat plans and the Tiger carries out. Then each has both initiative and the role of critic.

4 Friendship and shared work: the start and the calculation

A business pair of Rat and Tiger is one of the most practical neutral pairs. The Tiger feels the moment of "let's begin," the Rat can count what is needed to start. If you are launching a project, a shop, a studio or an event, you have a good set: the idea and the resource.

But watch the deadlines. The Tiger tends to hurry and so underestimates preparation; the Rat tends to delay and so overestimates risk. A working mechanism is to record three things in writing before the start: the budget, the date and the "stop" criterion. Then the Tiger gets a starting signal and the Rat gets confidence in the limits.

In friendship the pair holds together on shared adventures. A trip, a hike, a weekend project or studying together is the natural environment. Long talks "about nothing" go less well: the Tiger is soon bored. Add action to the friendship and it comes alive.

If you are a Tiger manager with a Rat employee, give him time to prepare and do not demand an answer "here and now." If you are a Rat manager with a Tiger employee, delegate beginnings and endings to him, and accompany the middle with regular checkpoints.

5 Winter and early spring: the seasonal picture of the pair

The season matters: it tells you what a chart lacks. The Rat 子 is midwinter, when everything is hidden and cold. The Tiger 寅 is the first month of spring, the beginning of the year by the solar calendar, from about 4 February. They stand next to each other in the seasons: winter releases spring. So many such pairs feel a kind of "thaw" in the relationship: beside the Tiger the Rat unfolds, beside the Rat the Tiger does not burn out.

But the cold in the branch 子 remains, and it needs Fire. It is good when the pair has a shared "warm" activity: the kitchen, a hearth, a home that is pleasant to come back to. Among its hidden stems the Tiger carries 丙 (Yang Fire), and with it he really can warm. Just make sure the warmth goes to both sides and not only from the Tiger.

A domestic touch about money and home. The Rat saves, the Tiger invests in experiences and status. This is a flaw in neither of them but two different ways of feeling safe: for Water, security is in reserve; for Wood, in growth and movement. A pair that has accepted this stops arguing about "extravagance" and "stinginess" and turns the conversation into a plan: how much goes to the cushion, how much to development, how much to joy right now. It gives the Tiger air and the Rat calm, and usually most of the petty quarrels about spending disappear after such an agreement.

The year stem changes the picture too. Tigers come in different kinds: 1974 甲寅 (Wood on Wood, the strongest forest), 1986 丙寅 (Fire, the wood ignites), 1998 戊寅 (Earth, restrained), 2010 庚寅 (Metal, hard) and 2022 壬寅 (Water, nourished Wood). A Rat paired with the 1974 Tiger and a Rat paired with the 1998 Tiger are two different stories, though the partners' sign is the same. But even the year stem is only a delicate hint next to the Day Master.

6 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them

Conflicts in a Rat and Tiger pair are usually tied to three themes. Speed. The Tiger wants to decide now, the Rat wants to think. A working rule: an urgent question gets a short answer, "I'll tell you tonight," and not silence. Recognition. The Rat often stays "off camera," and the Tiger forgets to say thanks. A spoken ritual helps: once a week, name specifically what the other has done. Openness. The Tiger speaks directly, the Rat subtly, and directness hurts. Agree on a formula: "I am going to say this straight, it is not an attack."

Another plot is money. The Tiger tends to spend widely, the Rat to set aside. The solution is a shared budget with a share of "no-questions" spending for each. Then the Tiger does not justify a purchase and the Rat does not worry about the reserve.

If a conflict drags on, a change of scene helps: Wood needs air and movement, Water needs fluidity. A walk, a trip or physical exercise together defuses far better than a "serious talk" at home.

7 Rat and Tiger in 2027: what the Goat brings

The year 丁未, the Fire Goat, touches your signs differently. For the Rat 子 it is harm 六害 (liù hài, 子未): a quiet erosion of trust and irritation over trifles. For the Tiger 寅 there is no direct link with 未: the Tiger is relatively neutral, which makes him the support of a pair in which the Rat carries the heavier load. Exactly how the year stem 丁 falls on your charts depends on the Day Masters.

In practice, if in 2027 the Rat suddenly becomes more irritable or quieter, that is more likely a general background than a "problem in the pair." The Tiger should not take it personally or press with "what happened?" a hundred times. The Rat, for her part, should not wait for her partner to guess but should say what exactly is wearing her out.

The months of 2027 touch your pair differently (boundaries ±1 day):

MonthFor the Rat 子For the Tiger 寅
癸卯, 6 Mar to 4 Aprpunishment 子卯刑Directional Combination 寅卯辰 (partial)
乙巳, 6 May to 5 Junno linkharm and punishment 寅巳
丙午, 6 Jun to 6 Julclash 子午冲half Three Harmony 寅午戌
丁未, 7 Jul to 7 Augharm 子未害no link
戊申, 8 Aug to 7 Sephalf Three Harmony 申子辰clash 寅申冲
辛亥, 7 Nov to 6 Decno linkunion and destruction 寅亥
壬子, 7 Dec to 5 Janrepetition 伏吟no link

The first month of the year, 壬寅 (4 February to 5 March), is "its own" for the Tiger: it repeats his branch. It is a start that is convenient for shared plans but not for promises for life. All of this is general background, not a forecast of events.

8 Why the year sign tells you little about a pair

Neutrality of year signs does not yet mean neutrality of the pair. Suppose you are a Rat 子 by year, with 戊 as Day Master and 午 in the day, while your partner is a Tiger 寅 by year, with 壬 as Day Master and 子 in the day. The year signs are quiet, but the Spouse Palaces (午 and 子) clash, and that determines the daily texture of the relationship far more than the year does.

So a full check runs through five layers on two charts: how the Day Masters relate to each other (including stem combinations like 丁壬), how the day branches interact, the balance and the useful element, the relationship stars, and the coincidence of the Luck Pillars 大運. The result is not a percentage but a description: where you lean on each other and where work is needed. A pair that is neutral by year can easily prove one of the most durable by chart, and the reverse.

If you want to try it in practice, begin with the free calculation: it shows the pillars and the main branch links of two people. For a complete description of the pair you need a compatibility reading.

9 How to use this sign pairing in practice

If you are a Rat and Tiger pair, take these rules. Agree who leads strategy and who leads tactics. Once a month talk about the balance of "giving and receiving." Keep free space for each: the Tiger needs freedom, the Rat needs quiet. In 2027 make an allowance that the Rat has it harder than usual, and support her without demanding explanations.

Above all: neutrality is an invitation to build the relationship consciously. There is no ready scenario, neither good nor bad. Whatever you build will be yours.

10 Frequently asked questions

Are the Rat and the Tiger compatible or not?

There are no direct branch links between 子 and 寅, so the pair is considered neutral. What comes of it is decided by the Day Masters, the Spouse Palaces and the elemental balance, not by the year sign.

What does "Water generates Wood" mean for a relationship?

By the five-element cycle the Rat (Water) feeds the Tiger (Wood). In life this often looks like resource support. But if there is little Water in the Rat's chart, the feeding may drain her.

Does the Tiger have trouble with the Goat in 2027?

There is no direct link between 寅 and 未. But during the year the months bring the Tiger separate links: for example 寅申冲 in August. This is a general background, not a prediction of events.

How can a Rat get through the 子未 harm in a couple?

Say plainly what is draining you, do not accumulate silence, and cut down surplus commitments. It helps the partner not to demand explanations at a moment of tiredness.

How do I check the pair properly?

You need the dates, times and places of birth of both. Then the five layers are calculated: Day Masters, day branches, elements, stars and periods.
