With other pairs the conversation is built around "do they attract or do they clash". Here the question is different: what comes out when two people are made of the same substance. The Rat 子 and the Pig 亥 both belong to Water. Both stand in the winter sector of the circle. Together they make up two thirds of the Directional Combination 三會 (sān huì, the three seasonal gatherings) 亥子丑: the northern, winter Water. Only the Ox 丑 is missing.

That is both a gift and a task. A gift, because the pair starts out with understanding that other people spend years building. A task, because a single element in a couple gives support but not balance: where nothing differs, nothing corrects. In the classical manner, such a union asks for fire and earth, and for friends with another temperament.

Below we go through what the shared Water gives, where its risks lie, how the winter of 2027–2028 lines up on the calendar, and what the year 2027 (丁未) does to this pair. As always, this is the layer of birth-year signs, one branch out of eight in each chart, and the end of the article explains why the real answer is in the full charts.

1 One Water for two

In the circle of branches the Pig 亥 stands right before the Rat 子: the Pig is the start of winter, and the Rat is its middle. They are neighbours by season. In the classics this is called 方合 (fāng hé, the "directional union") or 三會: branches of one time of year and one side of the compass gather into a single element. For winter that is the north and Water.

What does a pair with a shared element give? First of all, understanding without words. Both know what it is to live in the depths, to keep thoughts to themselves, to feel the mood of others. Neither demands explanations or likes fuss. A classic "brother and sister in spirit" pair: in each other they find someone to whom no explaining is needed.

There is a reverse side. When the element is one, there is no friction, but there is no complement either. Nobody brings into the pair what the other lacks. They feel each other well, but together they can drift in the same direction: too much reflection, too little action, too much emotional depth and too little warmth.

2 The stems: two kinds of water

Inside the branches their Water is different.

The Rat is 癸, thin, penetrating water: rain, mist, a stream. It is secretive and careful. The Pig is 壬, wide, open water: a river, an ocean. Plus 甲, the tree that grows out of this water. In the classics the Pig is generous and turned toward people, able to grow and bear fruit. The Rat concentrates and accumulates, while the Pig spreads out and gives away.

This is an important difference. When the pair argues, it seems to them that the matter is one of character, but in fact they are simply different forms of one element. One compresses, the other opens. It helps them to understand that this is a complement, not a contradiction.

3 Love and marriage

The start of a romance is usually warm and quiet. The Pig is open, good-natured and can court without pressure. The Rat as a rule looks around first, but quickly senses that the person nearby is safe. Then everything goes on the level of mutual care: cooking, the home, looking after health, presents for no reason.

The weakness of this pair shows in daily life. Both tend to avoid conflict and to put off unpleasant conversations. The Pig gives way to avoid a quarrel, the Rat withdraws into herself. Half a year later a "mountain of the unsaid" has formed between them. So they need a ritual that makes them talk: a shared walk, a weekly evening without phones, the habit of asking "how are you, really?".

If the Rat or the Pig stands in your Day Pillar, that is, in the Spouse Palace 夫妻宮 (fūqī gōng), the pair is almost always deeply tied emotionally. But Water in the palace of the spouse tends to an excess of feeling: too many expectations, too much "feeling into" each other. It is sensible to support the relationship consciously with deeds, not only with experiences.

4 Friendship

In friendship the pair is steady and warm. The Pig easily makes contact with people and draws the Rat out of seclusion. The Rat gives the Pig what she cannot do herself: caution and the ability to say "no" in time. At best they support each other for years without needing frequent meetings.

The risk is mutual indulgence. The Pig forgives too much, the Rat accepts too readily. Sometimes a friendship rests on one side that keeps adjusting. A healthy friendship here means that both sometimes say "this doesn't suit me".

5 Work and business

In business Water suits spheres where information, movement and exchange matter: trade, logistics, consulting, education, medicine and care, everything connected with motion and flow. The Pig builds relationships, organises people and knows how to run a business broadly. The Rat is responsible for strategy, counting and control of risk.

The problem is the lack of a firm structure. Water without banks spreads out, and in a pair where both are Water it is easy to have many ideas and few finished tasks. You need clear deadlines, people responsible and outside control: either an accountant or a partner with an "earthy" character who holds discipline. It is good if the project has a person with the element of Earth or Fire who will not let everyone float away.

From practice, two Water partners do especially well in business built around people and words: sales through relationships, teaching, mediation, care and service. There their gentleness, sensitivity and ability to sense the other person work as an asset, not a weakness. Anything that requires stopping in time and drawing a line is harder: price negotiations, collecting debts, hard deadlines. It is wise to give that part to someone outside or to assign it to whichever of the two finds it slightly easier, instead of hoping the matter will "somehow settle itself". Water does not like borders, and that is exactly why borders have to be set consciously.

6 The main risk: too much Water

In BaZi any element is good in measure. Too much Water looks like this: cold, excess anxiety, heightened sensitivity, difficulty making decisions, a tendency to "drown" problems in thinking. If Water is already strong in both charts (a winter birth, many 子, 亥, 癸, 壬), the pair will amplify this state.

What makes a pair stable? Four simple things.

Warmth. Fire warms cold Water. In practice that means a warm home, sun, hot food, shared celebrations, laughter, trips to warm places. Not a metaphor, but a real compensation for cold charts.

Earth. Earth guides water into a channel: routine, schedule, discipline, home. Without it the flow goes nowhere.

Wood. Water produces Wood, and when the pair has a shared living undertaking (a growing child, a garden, a project), the energy does not stagnate but is spent.

Outside people. A pair with a common element tends to close in. Friends of a different temperament bring the missing elements.

7 Winter 2027–2028: the calendar of the Directional Combination

The months follow the solar calendar and the boundaries are approximate (give or take a day).

MonthDatesBranchWhat it means for a Rat–Pig pair
辛亥7 November – 6 December 2027亥the Pig's month: the pair's branch is in view; for the Pig it is a 亥亥 repetition
壬子7 December 2027 – 5 January 2028子the Rat's month; Water at its peak
癸丑6 January – 3 February 2028丑the Ox arrives and completes the Directional Combination 亥子丑

This sequence is interesting: three months follow one another, and added to the pair's branches they form a complete winter gathering. Water in the pair becomes stronger than at any other period of the year. For some charts this is support, for others an overload. If your charts contain a lot of Water, then in winter the Rat and the Pig especially need warmth and routine. If Water is scarce, this period on the contrary supports you.

8 The pair in 2027 (丁未)

In 2027 the ruling branch is 未, the Goat and Tai Sui 太歲. For the Rat, the link with the year is the harm 子未 (六害, liù hài): a background of things left unsaid and mild irritability. For the Pig the layout is different: 亥 and 未 together form an incomplete Three Harmony 亥卯未, the union of Wood (the Rabbit 卯 is missing). This link is favourable and gives the Pig the "inspiration" of the year: it is easier to make plans, make connections, try something new.

On top of that, the hidden stem 壬 in the Pig meets the heavenly stem of the year 丁, and these two stems form the combination 丁壬合 (dīng-rén hé). In the classics such meetings are considered attractive: the year "turns" toward the Pig and pulls her toward changes, new acquaintances, development.

For the pair this makes an uneven layout. The Pig in 2027 is on the rise, the Rat takes the harm. The good news: the Pig knows how to share energy generously, and her activity can help the Rat. The bad news: if the Pig gets carried away by new acquaintances and projects, the Rat may feel forgotten. The solution is simple: set aside time for the two of you in advance and do not let the year's schedule eat it.

In July, in the 丁未 month (roughly 7 July to 7 August), both signs feel the year most strongly: for the Rat the harm is doubled by the month, for the Pig her union is doubled. It is a good time for the Pig's joint plans and for the Rat's caution. Afterwards the winter season shifts the centre back onto the pair.

This is the general background of the year, not fate and not a forecast of events. The Pig's union with the Goat does not promise luck, and harm to the Rat does not promise trouble: it concerns only the tone of the year for each.

9 Three pictures on the same signs

Take a person born in a Rat year with the Day Master 丙 (Yang Fire) on a winter night. For him the Water around is pressure: fire is cold and wet. A partner from a Pig year, with even more Water, is unlikely to be a support for him unless her chart has brought warmth and Wood. Such a Rat needs someone "with fire inside", even if by sign she is a Pig.

Now another case: the Rat's Day Master is 甲 (Yang Wood), born in a hot month, the chart dry and scorched. For him Water is useful, like rain for the steppe. A Pig partner carrying 壬 and 甲 becomes a lifebuoy, and the "same element" turns into the pair's main merit.

And a third case: both charts are balanced. Then the winter gathering gives a pair that understands each other at half a word, and shared life goes evenly, without drama. The birth-year signs of all three are the same, and it is impossible to predict from the signs which picture is yours.

10 How to live as a pair of two Waters in winter

The practice is familiar to anyone who has seen "Water" families. In winter they tend to retreat into domestic quiet: fewer guests, less movement, more sleep and series. This is pleasant, but if it lasts for months the energy stagnates. The classical advice: bring the pair out to the sun and to people in doses. At least one joint outing a week, a dinner in company every two weeks, activity in the open air in daylight.

Household details also help. Warm colours in the interior (red, orange and yellow accents), good lighting, hot food. There is no need to see magic in this: colour and light influence mood, and mood influences relationships. It is just that the metaphor of the elements here coincides with ordinary common sense.

One more observation. In a Water pair it is easy to replace conversation with intuitive understanding: "he'll guess anyway". He does not. Anyone, even the most sensitive person, sometimes needs to hear aloud what you feel and what you want. The closer people are, the more tempting silence is, and the more it eats away at the relationship.

11 Why the birth-year sign is only the top layer

The birth-year signs Rat and Pig are a convenient blank for conversation, but not a conclusion. A pair whose charts have an excess of Water and a pair whose charts have little Water will live in completely different ways with identical birth-year signs. The first needs fire and earth; for the second, Water is exactly what is useful, and for people whose Useful God is Water, partners made of Water become a real gift.

So the compatibility check goes through five layers: the Day Masters 日主 (rìzhǔ) and the relationship of their elements; the day branches, that is, the Spouse Palaces; the missing elements and whether the partner supplies them; the relationship stars; and the alignment of the ten-year Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn). What comes out is a map of supports and weak spots, not a compatibility percentage. Birth-year signs suggest the theme, and the charts give the answer.

12 Frequently asked questions

Are the Rat and the Pig compatible?
Birth-year signs give the Directional Combination 亥子丑, that is, kindred natures of one element. This is a good background, but the real answer comes from comparing the full charts: Day Masters, day branches, elements and periods.

How does the Directional Combination 三會 differ from the Three Harmony 三合?
A Three Harmony 三合 joins three branches toward a common goal, while a Directional Combination 三會 gathers three branches of one season and strengthens a single element. In a Rat–Pig pair it is winter Water that is strengthened.

Can there be too much Water in a pair?
Yes, if Water is already strong in both charts. Then the pair is worth "warming" with Fire and "guiding" with Earth: routine, warmth, living undertakings, friends of a different temperament.

How does 2027 affect this pair?
For the Rat the year brings the harm 子未; for the Pig it brings the incomplete Three Harmony 亥卯未 and the 丁壬合 combination. It is easier for the Pig this year and harder for the Rat, and it matters for the pair to protect time together. It is general background, not an event.

Are birth-year signs enough to choose a partner?
No. A year sign is one branch out of eight. For serious decisions you need the date, time and place of birth for both people.
