Among the pairs where the Rat has no direct conflict, the combination with the Monkey is counted as one of the most favourable. The reason is a chain taken from the classics: the branches 申 (shēn, the Monkey), 子 (zǐ, the Rat) and 辰 (chén, the Dragon) together form a 三合 (sān hé, Three Harmony), and the element of this union is Water. Our pair already has two of the three branches. Only the Dragon is missing.

This is called a 半合 (bàn hé, half combination). It is weaker than the complete one, but it works: between the two signs there is a pull toward each other and toward a common goal. This is exactly the feeling Rat–Monkey pairs most often describe: "it's so easy with them, as if we had known each other for ages". At the same time, half a union always implies that something is lacking, and it helps to know about that "something" in advance.

We will go through what the pairing consists of, what it means in love, friendship and business, where its weak spots are, and what changes in 2027, when the Rat falls under the year harm 子未 while the Monkey has no direct link to the year. All this belongs to the layer of birth-year signs, one branch out of eight. What the full chart says becomes clear only from the chart itself.

1 The 申子辰 trio and the Dragon that is missing

The Water union is built like a small story. The Monkey 申 is the place where Water is born (長生, cháng shēng, "long life", the birth stage). The Rat 子 is the place where Water is at its peak (帝旺, dì wàng, "imperial prosperity"). The Dragon 辰 is a storehouse where water gathers and stays in reserve (水庫, shuǐ kù, the "water vault"). Birth, flourishing, reserve.

Our pair has the birth and the flourishing. This is the strongest of the half-union variants: the classics especially prize the combination of "birth plus peak", 申子, because it contains both the source and the power. But there is no reserve, and in such a pairing Water can be turbulent and short-lived: there are many ideas, and it is harder to turn them into a result that accumulates.

The good news is that time sometimes brings the third branch. If a Dragon appears in your chart or in a ten-year Luck Pillar 大運 (dà yùn), the union "closes" and strengthens. Even an ordinary month whose branch is 辰 makes the trio complete for a while. In 2027 there is such a month, and it comes up below.

2 Metal feeds Water: the elemental mechanics

If you look only at the elements, Metal (申) produces Water (子). The Monkey gives, the Rat receives. Inside the branches the picture is subtler.

Monkey 申Rat 子

Role in the unionbirth of Waterpeak of Water

Three stems are hidden in the Monkey: 庚 (Yang Metal, a sharp blade), 壬 (Yang Water, a great river) and 戊 (Yang Earth, an embankment). The main stem 庚 feeds Water, and 壬 is itself Water. So the Monkey already has its own water, and the two "speak the same language" on two levels at once. The Earth 戊 adds "banks", and the water gets a channel.

For a partner this means the Monkey can be both a source and a riverbed. Next to it the Rat organises her own energy more easily: ideas take shape and plans get tied to deadlines. The other side: if both charts contain a lot of Water, they "overflow" together, and the pair drowns in conversations without decisions.

3 Love and marriage

In a romance these two usually begin with talk. The Monkey is witty, curious and quick on the uptake; the Rat is clever, perceptive and a good listener. They judge each other by intellect, and if they get together it tends to last: in this pair intellectual closeness matters more than passion.

A separate nuance is the Peach Blossom star 桃花 (táo huā), the star of charm and attraction. It is counted from the year or day branch, and for the group 申子辰 it falls on the Rooster 酉. Neither the Rat nor the Monkey is itself that star, so the magnetism in this pair is more intellectual and friendly than fiery. Expect a relationship that is a dialogue: first conversation and a shared interest, then everything else.

Daily life goes smoothly overall. Both sides value independence and do not demand to be dissolved in each other. The narrow point is emotion: both tend to discuss rather than feel, and sometimes a partner has to say plainly that what they need is a hug, not an analysis of the situation.

4 Friendship

For friendship this is almost the best combination among the "neutral" ones: both love exchanging information, both quickly find a common language and gladly help each other. The Monkey often becomes the generator of schemes, the Rat the one who thinks them through and keeps them from extremes. Their friendship is usually practical: shared trips, projects, mutual recommendations.

The risk in such a friendship is single: a contest of minds. If each starts proving they are the cleverer one, the lightness turns into a quiet struggle. A healthy habit saves it: admit the other person's point aloud and do not let sharp jokes turn into sarcasm.

5 Work and business

In business the pair works well. The union of Metal and Water is, in the classics, the image of "a sharp blade and clear water": analytics, technology, trade, consulting, information projects. The Monkey invents and tries things; the Rat calculates the risks and conducts negotiations. If they need a common till, the result is a thrifty and agile structure.

The missing Dragon shows up at work like this: ideas are there, but accumulation not always. A common "cushion" has to be written down: a fixed part of income that is not spent on new experiments. Without a rule the Water leaks away.

The strength of this pair in business is speed of learning and willingness to change tools. They master new things quickly and leave an outdated niche before others do, while competitors are still getting going. The weak spot is the same as in private life: finishing things and support after the sale. Here either a hired executor helps, or a firm rule: a project is closed not when it gets boring but when the result is delivered and the client is happy. Without such a rule the pair collects a lot of things started and few finished, which is exactly that unbuilt "water vault" 辰 mentioned above.

6 Pitfalls: what can go wrong

Too much calculation. Both can calculate, both can hide their thoughts. If there is no habit of saying what you actually feel, the pair turns into two closed fortresses that converse politely across a wall. Honesty matters more than cleverness.

Asymmetry of giving. Metal feeds Water, but not the other way round. The Monkey often feels she gives more, while the Rat does not notice that she receives. If one says "I am tired of giving", the other should hear it at once, not a year later.

No Earth. The pair is Metal and Water, with neither Fire to warm things nor Earth to hold them. Practically: ground the relationship in daily life, routine, shared tasks, a home; otherwise it is easy to float above reality.

Cold. Metal and Water are cold elements. It helps the pair to add warmth deliberately: shared dinners, celebrations, jokes, trips to warm places. This is not a metaphor: in the charts of cold-natured people, warmth really is considered a compensating factor.

7 The pair in 2027 (丁未)

The year is governed by 丁未, and the branch 未 is the Goat and Tai Sui. For the Rat, the link with the year is 六害 (liù hài, Six Harms) 子未: a background of things left unsaid, small misunderstandings and mild irritability. For the Monkey and the Goat, the classics list no direct links: the Monkey "stands nearby" but is not drawn into the game of the year.

For the pair this is not a bad layout. One of the partners is not subject to the pressure of the year, and that calm helps the other. This year it makes sense for the Monkey to play the role of support: not to criticise the Rat for irritability and not to overload her with difficult topics.

The calendar adds one more detail. The 甲辰 month runs roughly from 5 April to 5 May 2027 (the boundaries are approximate, give or take a day). Its branch 辰 is the Dragon, and together with the Monkey and the Rat it closes the trio 申子辰. In the classical understanding such a month gives the pair an impulse toward joint decisions, good for shared projects and conversations about plans. It is not a promise of luck, but a hint about when your pairing has more inner energy. Later, from 8 August to 7 September, comes the 戊申 month: its branch coincides with the Monkey, and she is in her own zone. From 7 December the 壬子 month brings the Rat's own branch, and the year harm 子未 is heard louder again.

In practice it may look like this. In spring, in the 甲辰 month, it is convenient to discuss shared plans for the year: a move, a job change for one partner, a joint venture. In summer, when the year presses harder on the Rat, it is better not to start difficult discussions and to keep the usual rhythm. In autumn, in the 戊申 month, the Monkey is usually in good form and can take the initiative. In winter, in the 壬子 month, the Rat needs a pause and quiet, and the gift is an absence of demands. This is not a schedule for the year but a hint on how to spread the load when the month branches touch your pair.

This is the general background of the year, not a forecast of events. A month with a "closed trio" guarantees neither a deal nor a romance, and the harm of the year does not promise a quarrel. The background only suggests which time suits which conversations.

8 Money, promises and trust

The Rat–Monkey pair has one shared weakness: both tend to trust their own mind more than other people's promises. So money agreements are better written down from the start, even if you live together and trust each other. Writing it down is not about distrust. It is about the fact that two quick minds easily remember the same conversation in different ways.

A practical rule for such pairs: discuss any sum above ordinary expenses in advance, record the decision in a message or a note, and come back to it a month later. The Monkey inclines to experiments and new investments, the Rat to caution, and the compromise is most often found in a "trial period": a small sum, clear deadlines, then a decision.

Trust in such a pair grows from honesty in small things, not from grand gestures. Admitting you were wrong in a calculation, saying "I don't know", promising less than you can deliver: such things are valued here above gifts. Both partners read each other well and quickly notice falseness, so the game of "everything is under control" works badly.

9 Three pictures behind one pairing

Suppose the Rat partner has the Day Master 癸 (Yin Water) and the Monkey partner has 庚 (Yang Metal). Metal produces Water, and the overall picture looks classical: the Monkey supports, the Rat opens up. The Monkey functions here as a resource, and the pair lives calmly.

Now suppose the Monkey partner's Day Master is 丙 (Yang Fire). Water puts out Fire, and Metal beside Fire melts. The birth-year signs are the same, but the tone of the relationship is different: the Monkey feels she is being "put out" by the Rat and looks for places where she can catch fire. Personal projects and a sphere where each is their own master help such a pair.

And a third picture: both partners have a Water Day Master and the charts are rich in Water. Here the friendship is wonderful, but the pair is flooded: too many thoughts and too little action, so "banks" have to be sought through Earth and Fire. All three pairs were born in Rat and Monkey years, and all three will be called "compatible by signs". The difference between them is huge.

10 Why the birth-year sign is only the top layer

On paper the Rat–Monkey pair is good, but by the charts it may turn out differently. If the partners' day branches clash (say one has 子 and the other 午), the pleasant pair of birth-year signs recedes into the background. If, on the contrary, the signs of their days form a union and the Day Masters feed each other, even without the Dragon the pair will be solid.

Here are the five checks made on two full charts: the Day Masters 日主 (rìzhǔ) and the relationship of their elements; the day branches, that is, the Spouse Palaces; the missing elements and whether the partner supplies them; the relationship stars; and the synchronicity of the ten-year Luck Pillars 大運. There is no compatibility percentage in the end. There is a map of supports: where the pair is strong, where it is thin, which periods are favourable. Birth-year signs in this picture are an introduction, not the decision.

11 Frequently asked questions

Are the Rat and the Monkey among the most compatible signs?
In the classics their link 申子辰 is considered favourable, but the union is incomplete, without the Dragon 辰. The pair is drawn to each other, which is a good start. Conclusions about a long marriage are drawn from the full charts.

What does an incomplete trio mean?
Of the three branches of the Water union, two are present. The pull and shared goals are there, but the "storehouse", accumulation, is missing. It can appear in the chart, in a ten-year period or in a suitable month.

Is it true that the Monkey always gives and the Rat always takes?
That is the elemental scheme: Metal produces Water. In a real pair the roles are set by the Day Masters and the balance of elements in the charts. But a conversation about equal giving is useful for every such pair.

How does 2027 affect this pair?
For the Rat the year brings the 子未 harm; for the Monkey there are no direct links. The 甲辰 month (about 5 April to 5 May) completes the trio 申子辰 for a while. This is general background, not an event.

Are birth-year signs enough to decide on marriage or business?
No. A year sign is one branch out of eight. For decisions, the full charts of both partners are compared.
