If you open the table of the twelve branches, the Ox and the Dragon look almost like twins. Both branches belong to Earth, and both are among the "earthly storehouses" 四庫 (sì kù): the Ox 丑 stores Metal, the Dragon 辰 stores Water. Both hide Yin Water 癸 (guǐ) inside. Both have a patient, reserved and practical character. You might think no better pair could be invented. Yet the classical sources link precisely these two branches with the sign of "six destructions" 六破 (liù pò), 丑辰破 (chǒu-chén pò). To understand what this means in practice, we need to look at what such a link is and what it is not.

To run ahead: 破 is the quietest of the unpleasant links. It does not tear a relationship apart as a clash 沖 does, and it does not poison it for years as a punishment 刑 does. It wears at the edge: small losses, misunderstandings, a feeling that for some reason you fit together worse than you could. And when the pair knows about it, 破 loses almost all its force.

The frame. The year sign gives only one character out of eight. What follows is a general background, not fate. The Day Master 日主 (rì zhǔ) and the day branches of each partner can rewrite everything said here.

1 The pantry and the cellar: what these branches are

The Ox 丑 is the last winter month, roughly January 6 to February 3. It is Yin Earth, cold and damp; inside are 己 (jǐ, Yin Earth), 癸 (guǐ, Yin Water) and 辛 (xīn, Yin Metal). It is the "storehouse of Metal" 金庫: Metal is born in the Snake, reaches its strength in the Rooster, and in the Ox goes into storage.

The Dragon 辰 is Yang Earth, the last month of spring, roughly April 5 to May 5. Inside are 戊 (wù, Yang Earth) as the main stem, 乙 (yǐ, Yin Wood) and 癸 (guǐ, Yin Water). This is spring earth, damp and saturated, and it is the "storehouse of Water" 水庫: the trio 申子辰 (Monkey-Rat-Dragon) completes exactly in the Dragon. Spring mud from which everything grows, with both water and roots in it.

They share two things: the element Earth and the Water 癸. But the Earths are different. The Ox is Yin, cold, closed, a warehouse; the Dragon is Yang, mobile, ambitious, not a warehouse in the everyday sense but a raw, fertile layer from which growth bursts. The Ox saves, the Dragon invests in growth. The Ox protects, the Dragon deploys. This difference shows in money, in plans and in attitude to risk.

2 What 破 is, and why it is not frightening

The classics list six pairs of "destruction" 六破: 子酉, 丑辰, 寅亥, 卯午, 巳申, 未戌. Schools weigh these links differently: some masters regard 破 as a weak factor to mention only when there are no other links, while others use it as an indicator of "cracks" in particular circumstances.

Reduced to practice, 破 shows up as gradual wear. Not an explosion and not drama, but a feeling that part of the effort goes to waste. You agreed and it did not get done. You bought something and were disappointed. You planned together and each understood it in a different way. Note that the wording is very "earthy," and for two Earth signs it is relevant: the destruction concerns material agreements, obligations and household matters.

There is also a rule of proportion. A weak link like 破 is overridden by stronger ones: a combination 合 elsewhere in the chart, a Three Harmony 三合, shared useful elements. If the two have such links, 丑辰破 effectively does not work. If there are no other links, 破 may show more clearly. That is why you cannot judge by a single link.

3 The shared Water 癸: what unites them

The pair also has a strong side that is usually neglected. The 癸 (Yin Water) in the hidden stems of both means a shared emotional lining: both feel more deeply than they show. The Ox hides feelings under quiet reliability, the Dragon under self-assurance and scope. If they have learned to notice this in each other, the relationship gains a rare depth: the partner sees not the facade but what is behind it.

In daily life this looks like the ability to understand silently that the other is having a hard day. Nobody questions; someone puts the kettle on, someone sits down nearby. Such couples often say they do not need "many words."

4 Love and marriage: scope and foundation

The Dragon is the most vivid sign of the zodiac. It loves scale, recognition and big plans, and it knows how to lead. Next to it the Ox looks quiet, but that is half the attraction: the Dragon needs a person who will not compete for the stage and yet will not fall apart at its tempo. The Ox can well become that person.

Difficulties begin with money and plans. The Dragon tends to promise and expand, the Ox tends to check and postpone. The Dragon sees an opportunity, the Ox sees a risk. In a relationship this sounds like "we're going to Italy in September" against "let's look at the budget first." Neither is right or wrong; they are simply built differently. There is one way out: a shared financial plan with a share for dreams. Let the Dragon know that a certain part of the budget, say ten percent, goes to the spontaneous and ambitious, and let the Ox know that the rest is not touched.

The second source of tension: the Dragon needs admiration, and the Ox does not know how to praise aloud. It believes support shows in deeds. For the Dragon that is not enough, and it starts looking for recognition outside. If you are an Ox paired with a Dragon, learn to say one simple phrase: "you did that well." It weighs more than a year of silent care.

A separate word on home and children. Both signs take family seriously, and both want the home to be "real": with supplies, with its own traditions, with a feeling that people have lived here for a long time. The Dragon adds festivity, guests and scale to the home; the Ox adds order. With children the couple usually divides things up: the Ox handles routine and safety, the Dragon handles inspiration and prospects. A dispute arises when the Dragon promises a child something grand and the Ox then quietly looks for a way to deliver. Agree that promises to children are made only after discussing them together.

If you are looking at your own charts, pay attention to a few places where the "destruction" is either amplified or damped. First: the day branches. If one of you has 丑 as the day branch and the other 辰, the 破 lands directly in the Spouse Palace, and then everyday misunderstandings are felt more sharply. Second: the hidden stems. The Dragon's 戊 and the Ox's 己 are "brother and sister" in the element Earth and reinforce each other, while the Dragon's 乙 and the Ox's 辛 form a tense pair of stems: Yin Metal controls Yin Wood (some schools call it 乙辛冲). Both stems are junior, "residual" ones in their branches, so this tension is undercurrent and weak. Third: third branches in the charts. A Snake 巳 or a Rooster 酉 in the Dragon's chart gives part of the trio 巳酉丑 with the Ox, and the Rooster also forms a Six Harmony 辰酉合 with the Dragon itself; the weak 破 then sits inside a more powerful link.

5 Friendship

In friendship the pair works evenly and warmly. The Dragon brings ideas, contacts and energy, the Ox brings stability and loyalty. A friendship between an Ox and a Dragon often begins with a joint project and then outgrows it. It holds best when neither tries to prove who is more successful: the Dragon is competitive by nature, and if the Ox quietly "overtakes" it at something, in a friendship this can register as a sting.

One more feature: both remember grievances for a long time. The Ox does not mention them, the Dragon pretends to have forgotten. If a chill has set into the friendship, it does not dissolve on its own; one direct conversation is needed, after which both exhale and return to contact.

6 Work and business

Here both Earths give a solid base: both understand the value of assets, processes and long horizons. The Dragon leads, draws people in and scales; the Ox handles execution and financial discipline. If roles are divided fairly, the result is a stable business.

It is precisely in business that 丑辰破 shows most often: agreements both sides thought were clear diverge in detail; deliveries, deadlines and obligations turn out to be understood differently. Simple hygiene helps: everything in writing, everything with dates, every agreement duplicated by a message. The Ox likes this culture, the Dragon agrees reluctantly and then values it.

7 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them

"But we agreed"

The classic trace of 破. The remedy: a short written summary after any important conversation. Three lines in a messenger: what was decided, who does it, by what date.

"You're too careful" and "you're too reckless"

Mutual reproaches around risk. It is better to agree on rules: amounts below a certain threshold each person spends independently, above the threshold you decide together. Define the threshold in advance and write it down.

The struggle for recognition

The Dragon craves applause, the Ox cannot give it. If you are the Dragon, say plainly that it matters to you to hear an assessment. If you are the Ox, remember: for a Dragon, words are not flattery but fuel.

Reserve

Both find it hard to talk about weaknesses, and the Water 癸 inside keeps accumulating. Agree on a regular "climate check": once a week one question, "how are you really?", and an answer without judgments or advice.

8 The Ox and Dragon couple in 2027

2027 is a 丁未 (dīng wèi) year, the Fire Goat, and it begins with 立春 (lì chūn) around February 4, 2027. For the Ox, the Goat is a clash 六冲 (丑未冲, chǒu-wèi chōng) and an incomplete punishment 三刑 丑戌未, the ungrateful punishment. For the Dragon 辰 there is no direct link with the Goat 未: no combination, no clash, no harm. The asymmetry is typical of pairs where the second sign is unconnected to the Goat: the Ox feels a shake-up, the Dragon stands nearby and can become a support.

There is a calendar detail that concerns this pair specifically. The 庚戌 month (roughly October 8 to November 6, 2027) brings the Dog 戌. For the Ox, the Dog joins the year's Goat, and the 丑戌未 trio assembles in full. For the Dragon, the Dog is 辰戌冲, a direct clash in the month. It turns out that in October and early November both partners are under tension, but for different reasons: the Ox has a "punishment," the Dragon a "clash." If you need to make big decisions together at that time, do it deliberately, not on emotion, or move the main discussions to neighboring months. The 甲辰 month (roughly April 5 to May 5), by contrast, is the Dragon's month: a time when it is active and visible, and the Ox has to adjust.

What this looks like in life, hypothetically. Suppose in autumn 2027 the couple has to decide whether to extend the lease on premises for a joint venture or to change apartments. In those weeks the Ox is especially sensitive to any losses and inclined to cling to the old, while the Dragon is tense and ready to cut with one stroke. If the discussion is conducted "on nerves," both will remember it as another "but we agreed." If you write out the options with figures in advance and let the decision settle until mid-November, when the month changes, the conversation goes more calmly. There is no mysticism here: tense weeks are simply a poorer fit for irreversible decisions, and you can see this in advance on the calendar.

All of this refers to the general climate of the year. How it lands on your charts is shown by the Year Ahead Context 2027 · $19.90: it is calculated individually and shows which areas bring pressure and which bring opportunity.

9 Why the year sign is only the top layer

For the Ox and the Dragon this is especially true. The 破 link belongs to the year branches; but in a living chart the year branch sits beside the branches of the month, day and hour, and any of them can form with the partner an alliance that overrides the weak "destruction." The same goes for elements: if the Ox's Day Master is 己 (Yin Earth) and the Dragon's is 戊 (Yang Earth), they are "brother and sister" in element, and the mutual understanding is different. If the Ox's Day Master is 癸 (Water) and the Dragon's is 戊 (Earth), the Dragon is "authority" and control for it; yet 戊 and 癸 form a combination 戊癸合, so control here is mixed with attraction, and the dynamic is completely different.

There is also a reverse scenario worth keeping in mind. If one partner's day branch is 酉 (Rooster), it combines with the Dragon (辰酉合) and at the same time forms with the Ox a half-trio 酉丑 of the Metal trio 巳酉丑. Then the year-level 丑辰破 sits against a background of two strong links and is practically unnoticeable. That is exactly why you can neither praise a pair nor frighten it on the strength of a single link of year branches.

So a pair is checked across five layers: the Day Masters, the Spouse Palaces (day branches), the useful elements, relationship stars and the match of the Luck Pillars 大運. The result is not a percentage but a description of where the supports are and where it is thin. The details of the method are in the guide BaZi Compatibility: 5 Layers of the Real Method. You can read your own sign in the breakdowns of the Year of the Ox and the Year of the Dragon, and working pairs are covered in the article on business compatibility.

10 Frequently asked questions

Are the Ox and the Dragon compatible?

The branches 丑 and 辰 are linked by 六破 (a weak "destruction"), while both belong to Earth and carry Yin Water 癸. The classics rate 破 as a factor of low strength; the outcome depends on the other links in the charts.

What is 六破 in plain words?

It is a mild negative link: small losses, unspoken points, a feeling that effort is going to waste. It is overridden by combinations 合 and shared elements elsewhere in the chart.

Who leads in such a pair?

As a rule the Dragon sets the scope and direction, and the Ox holds execution and finances. It works well when decisions are divided by zone, not by the principle of "whoever is louder."

What will the Goat year 2027 bring this pair?

For the Ox the Goat brings the clash 丑未冲, while for the Dragon there is no direct link. In October and early November 2027 (the 庚戌 month) both are under tension for different reasons. This is a general background, not a forecast of events.

Can the two of us run a business?

You can, if agreements are recorded in writing and zones are divided. Whether a specific pair is suited is determined by a calculation on the full charts.
