Goat and Monkey:
Earth feeds Metal

In the cycle of the twelve branches the Goat and the Monkey stand side by side: 未 (wèi) is the eighth, 申 (shēn) the ninth. Neighbours in the circle, and as with neighbours, they share many walls and few rules. The classical table of links is silent about this pair. There is no 六合, no 三合, no 沖, no 害, no 破. What remains is what the elements show: the Earth of the Goat generates the Metal of the Monkey.

Generation sounds pleasant, but it has a reverse side: the one who generates, gives. Mother Earth bears the ore, the metal receives shape and strength, and the mother grows tired. In the classics this is called 泄 (xiè, "leakage"): if an element generates another too actively, it loses strength. For the Goat that means the more she gives, the weaker she becomes. Here is the picture in which this pair opens best. The Monkey finds in the Goat a safe harbour: a person to return to after risky ventures without hearing reproaches. • "You don't hear me." The Goat's complaint. The Monkey answers messages in passing, on the run. Agree on a short daily meeting face to face, ten minutes without the phone.
• "You are smothering me." The Monkey's complaint. The Goat hides a wish to control behind care. A rule helps: help is offered, not imposed.
• Jokes on the edge. The Monkey quips, the Goat is hurt. You need an agreement about which subjects are off limits for irony.
• Different tempos of decision. One decides instantly, the other over hours. Set a deadline: "an answer by Friday".
• The Goat's accumulated fatigue. Once a quarter it is worth arranging a "release": a weekend when the Goat organizes nothing.

8 The pair in 2027 and the relay of 2028

2027 is the year 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat, beginning around 4 February at 立春 (lì chūn, the Beginning of Spring). For the Goat it is a 本命年 (běn mìng nián): the year branch coincides with Tai Sui 太歲, a repetition 伏吟 (fú yín). By tradition such a year is counted as a time of change and of attention to one's own life. The softness of the sign is needed here as never before: sharp steps without preparation are not advised, and health and routine deserve separate attention.

For the Monkey 申 there is no direct link with the year branch 未. That is an even background. The Monkey may feel the year as lighter and freer, and this creates an asymmetry in the pair: the Goat is at the centre of her own changes, the Monkey beside her. In practice remember that the Goat partner is more sensitive than usual this year. More patience, fewer jokes on the edge, more concrete support.

The calendar of 2027 adds shades. The month 丁未 (roughly 7 July to 7 August) is the "double Goat": the pair of year and month coincides, a peak of attention for the Goat.
