Open any table of branch relations and look for the Dragon 辰 and the Pig 亥. The cell is empty. There is no 六合 (liù hé, Six Harmony), no 六沖 (liù chōng, Six Clash), no 害 (hài, harm), no 破 (pò, destruction), no shared triple. For anyone used to the idea that compatibility has to "show something," this is disorienting. So what does an empty cell mean: that the pair is of no interest, or that all the work happens somewhere else?
The second is true. In BaZi, the absence of a classical link between branches says one thing only: the life of the pair is not predetermined by the year signs. Neither attraction nor friction is built into the branches themselves, so the relationship is made of what two people bring into it: their elements, their Day Masters, and how the periods of their lives line up. A neutral pair can be happy, unremarkable or painful, and which one depends on the charts.
Below is what can honestly be said about the Dragon and the Pig from the signs alone, and the point where you should put the table down and open the charts.
1 The one visible thread: Earth and Water
The branch elements of this pair differ. 辰 (chén, the Dragon) belongs to Earth and 亥 (hài, the Pig) to Water. In the controlling cycle Earth restrains Water (土克水): a dam directs the river. At the level of the signs this reads as a tilt towards the Dragon, which tends to lead and set the channel, while the Pig adapts, spreads out and slips aside when pressed.
That sounds like a bad deal for the Pig, but real life is gentler. In the Five Elements system, control is a way of regulating, and calling it hostility is a mistake. Water without banks floods; Earth without water cracks. Many pairs of this kind hold together precisely because one provides form and the other movement. The warning sign is only the extreme case, when the Dragon begins to "lock" the Pig into a frame and the Pig either resists or vanishes.
2 What is inside: the hidden stems
Look beyond the surface and the pair appears differently. The hidden stems 藏干 (cáng gān) of the two branches are these:
| Branch | Hidden stems | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 辰 Dragon | 戊 Yang Earth, 乙 Yin Wood, 癸 Yin Water | Earth with a touch of moisture and young Wood; the "storehouse of Water" |
| 亥 Pig | 壬 Yang Water, 甲 Yang Wood | Great water from which Wood grows |
Of the six stems only one, 戊, is Earth. The other five are Water and Wood. By content, then, the Dragon is much closer to the Pig than its element name suggests. This is a "damp" Dragon: it holds Water (癸) and carries a sprout of 乙, while the Pig, bearer of 壬 and 甲, is exactly Water with Wood. When people in Dragon-Pig couples say "we seemed to understand each other from half a word," they are most often describing this shared inner layer.
The classics also call 辰 a storehouse of Water, and 亥 the place where 壬 stands at the peak of its "official standing" (in the cycle of twelve stages this is 臨官, lín guān, "taking office"). Put simply, the Pig is the spring and the Dragon is the reservoir. One gathers, the other gives.
3 The character of the pairing
The Dragon usually sees further than the time it takes to get a result: it builds projects and reputation. The Pig hears people, knows how to live in the present and stops at the right moment. Together they can do something rare, which is scale without fuss. The Dragon sets a big goal, and the Pig makes sure that people and energy are not lost on the way.
Trouble begins when the styles diverge. The Dragon is forceful and direct, the Pig avoids open conflict, and accumulated dissatisfaction comes out sideways: as silence, postponed chores, a sudden "I can't do this anymore." Experienced couples agree on a signal phrase ("I need a break"), after which the discussion is put off for a day.
4 Love and marriage
In romance, neutral branches give freedom and responsibility at once. Nothing pushes the pair together "fatefully," but nothing stands in the way either. Hence a common storyline: friendship first, then a relationship that ripens slowly and reliably. There is no bright flash, but no sharp collapses either.
In practice, look at three things. The first is who sets the pace. If the Dragon always leads, the Pig grows tired of being led. The second is money: the Pig is generous, the Dragon likes to invest, and without a common plan spending grows. The third is home life: the Dragon needs an audience and achievements, the Pig needs a home harbour, and it is good when each has both rather than a single script for everything.
If 辰 or 亥 sits in the day pillar of one partner (the Spouse Palace 夫妻宮, fūqī gōng), the link is more noticeable. But the real weight in a neutral pair belongs to other factors: the Day Masters, and whether either person's elemental balance is weak in a way the partner can support. More on this in the guide to the five layers.
A pair with no verdict from the signs: look at the real charts
In a neutral pair, everything is decided by Day Masters, elements and periods. A compatibility reading shows them across both charts. Couple Compatibility Reading, $14.90.

To show how little the Dragon-Pig label says on its own, take three hypothetical examples and look at the Day Masters only.
First pair. The Dragon person has a 戊 (Yang Earth) Day Master, the Pig person 癸 (Yin Water). This is the classic stem combination 戊癸合: Earth and Water "bond," and the pair has a strong sense of kinship, a feeling of having known each other for a long time. Earth's control over Water becomes care and support. The neutral branches simply stay out of the way.
Second pair. The Dragon person has 庚 (Yang Metal), the Pig person 壬 (Yang Water). Metal produces Water, and the flow runs from the Dragon to the Pig: one supports, the other grows alongside. If the Dragon is tired, the partner feels like water after a hot day. But watch that the one who gives is not always the same person.
Third pair. The Dragon person has 壬, the Pig person 丙 (Yang Fire). Most schools count 壬 and 丙 as a stem clash (丙壬沖). Water puts out Fire, Fire evaporates Water, and the pair lives through many temperature swings. The signs are the same, and the branch table still says "neutral." But in daily life it is one of the harder options.
That is why an honest assessment starts from the charts: three pairs, the same two year branches, three different stories.
5 Friendship and work
In friendship this pair hardly ever conflicts. Different tempos and different circles do not interfere; they make the contact interesting. The Dragon brings in acquaintances, the Pig knows how to keep them. Both enjoy being friends with the other and rarely hurt each other seriously.
At work the picture is more complicated. The Dragon naturally claims the role of leader and strategist, the Pig the role of the person who can negotiate and mend relations inside the team. If both agree, the partnership is effective. If the Dragon starts to push and makes decisions without discussion, the Pig quietly leaves the game. Write down the areas of responsibility in advance. For a business, a weekly ritual of fifteen minutes works well, in which you discuss not tasks but how it feels to work with each other.
6 Typical difficulties and how to ease them
- Pressure and evasion. The Dragon pushes, the Pig slips away. The Dragon should ask questions instead of giving directives; the Pig should name an objection right away, while it is still small.
- Different scale. The Dragon thinks in years, the Pig in the coming weeks. Split a joint plan into stages, each with a clear checkpoint.
- The unspoken. The Pig stores things up and the Dragon does not notice. Hold a short talk once a week with phones away.
- Roles at home. Do not impose the "right" division on your partner. Renegotiate whenever circumstances change.
7 The pair in 2027, the year of the Goat
The year 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat, begins with 立春 (lì chūn, the Start of Spring), around 4 February 2027. For the Dragon, the year branch 未 forms no direct link: it is a neutral year by branches, and the influence is determined by the elements and by which pillars of its chart are touched. For the Pig it is different: 亥 and 未 together form two thirds of the Three Harmony 亥卯未 (Wood). The triple is incomplete: it needs 卯 (the Rabbit) as well.
Here the calendar helps. In the second month of 2027, 癸卯 (about 6 March to 4 April), the month branch 卯 arrives and the triple closes for the Pig: 亥 from the chart, 卯 from the month, 未 from the year. This window strengthens Wood and inspires movement, new plans and new acquaintances. For the Dragon, the same month brings a harm 卯辰害 (mǎo-chén hài): hidden tension, small misunderstandings, a feeling that something is off with no visible reason. The couple can live these weeks out of sync, with the Pig on a rise and the Dragon irritable. If you know it in advance, it is enough not to mistake the mood of these weeks for the essence of the relationship.
Another notable period is 壬子 (about 7 December 2027 to 5 January 2028): the month branch 子 gives Water to both. For the Pig this is 亥子, two of the three branches of the winter Directional Combination 亥子丑 (incomplete without the Ox); for the Dragon it is 子辰, two of the three in the Water Three Harmony 申子辰 (also incomplete without the Monkey). In December the pair shares a common supporting element. Month boundaries are approximate, give or take a day, and all of this is a general backdrop and not a promise of events. What these knots mean for particular people is decided by the chart.
8 Why the year sign is only the top layer
The neutrality of two year branches promises nothing in advance, including "it will all be fine." The real check begins after that, on the two charts, and in a pair with no classical links it matters most. Here are the five layers, looked at in order.
- Day Masters 日主 (rì zhǔ): whether they feed each other, control each other, or join in a stem combination (for example 甲己 or 丁壬).
- Day branches, the Spouse Palaces: this is where everyday life lives.
- Elemental balance: whether each gives the other what is missing.
- Relationship stars: temperament, the need for personal space, the pull of novelty.
- Luck Pillars 大運 (dà yùn): whether the decades of rise and decline coincide.
By year, a Dragon and a Pig may turn out to be a pair whose Day Masters combine and everything fits warmly. Or they may be a pair with control between the Day Masters and different Luck Pillars, where "neutrality" helps with nothing. Each sign on its own is covered in the articles on the Year of the Dragon and the Year of the Pig.
Where to start if you are exactly this pair
A practical order of steps for those who recognised themselves. First find out each person's Day Master and its element: it answers the question "do we feed each other" faster than any sign. Then look at which pillars hold your 辰 and 亥. In the year pillar they speak of family and surroundings, in the month pillar of work and social face, in the day pillar of home, in the hour pillar of children and later years. The same branch weighs differently in different places.
Next, notice what the charts lack in elements. If the Dragon has too much Earth, some Water nearby does no harm, and the Pig comes in handy. If the Pig has an excess of Water, the active Earth of the Dragon works, on the contrary, as a bank. Finally, compare the decades: one of you may be starting or ending a big period in the coming years, and the pair should know it in advance.
A tip for each
Dragon: before proposing a solution, ask the Pig how she or he sees it. It takes a minute and saves months of understatement. Do not take softness for agreement: a Pig's "fine" can mean "I'm not ready to argue yet." Pig: voice disagreement at the moment it appears, even if it seems minor. The Dragon usually values directness and does not take offence at it the way you fear. Both: mark shared achievements and not only personal ones. A neutral pair is held together by common stories of success.
9 Frequently asked questions
Is a neutral pair good or bad?
Neither. There is no classical link between 辰 and 亥, so the branches neither help nor hinder. The result depends on the elements and the other pillars of both people.
If Earth controls Water, will the Dragon dominate the Pig?
There is a tendency towards it at the level of the signs, but control in the Five Elements is a way of regulating and not enmity. The two also share a lot in their hidden stems: Water and Wood. The real style of a pair depends on the character of the people.
What will 2027 bring this pair?
For the Pig it is a year of the incomplete Three Harmony 亥卯未, which closes in the 卯 month (about 6 March to 4 April). For the Dragon the year is neutral, but the same month gives it a harm 卯辰害. This is a general backdrop and not a forecast of events.
Are birth time and place needed to assess a pair?
Not for a read by year signs, but for real compatibility yes: the hour and month pillars change the picture, especially near boundary dates.
Is there a compatibility percentage for Dragon and Pig?
BaZi has no such number. What exists is a description of layers: elements, branches, stars, periods. A percentage is an invention of popular websites.
