Dog and Pig:
the dam and the river in the northwest of the circle

"We're 78% compatible" is not how BaZi measures a couple. The system has no single number. It has several layers of interaction between two charts, and a pair can be brilliant on one layer and strained on another. Comparing birth-year animals reaches only the outermost layer, so treat what follows as background.

A river without banks floods, and banks without a river dry out. If you look for an image of a Dog and Pig couple, none is better. The Dog (戌) is Yang Earth, the habit of setting boundaries and keeping one's word. The Pig (亥) is big Water, the ability to receive, to flow and not to ask too much. Between them, as often happens in life, there is the attraction of different natures: one holds, the other fills.

In the classical table of links these two branches have no place. Neither 六合, nor 六冲, nor 六害, nor 六破, nor 三刑 is recorded between 戌 and 亥. It is a neutral pair, and all that can be said at the level of signs lies in the realm of the elements: Earth controls Water (土克水, tǔ kè shuǐ). Control in the language of the Five Elements does not mean "enmity". It is a relation of management, in which one element sets the frame for the other. But the force with which the frame is set decides everything.

1 Earth and Water: frame and flow

Control between elements is often misunderstood. Earth that controls Water does not destroy it but directs it: a channel, a dam, a bank. Without this frame Water spreads and loses its strength. That is why the classical texts do not treat 土克水 as bad: relationships with control in them can be very productive, provided the "controller" knows how not to press.

In life it looks like this. The Dog takes on the function of the frame: discipline, order, responsibility for the result. The Pig supplies the content: warmth, breadth, trust. The pair is stable as long as the frame does not become a cage and the flow does not become a flood. The first sign of trouble is that the Pig feels "restricted" while the Dog feels "flooded".

2 Neighbors on the circle: 戌 and 亥

In the row of twelve, 戌 is the eleventh branch and 亥 the twelfth, one after the other. The first closes autumn, the second opens winter. In the spatial scheme both stand in the northwest sector, which in the system of trigrams corresponds to 乾 (Qián, "Heaven"). This closeness is traditionally read as a theme of transition: the completion of one cycle and preparation for the next.

A pair of signs so close often has a shared nerve: a feeling of "ending" and "stillness". Both the Dog and the Pig tend to live through results, recall things and draw a line. Together they sense each other well at moments when fatigue arrives and you want to close the door.

3 Hidden stems: 丁 and 壬

Look inside. The hidden stems of 戌 are 戊, 辛, 丁. The hidden stems of 亥 are 壬 (the main one) and 甲. Among them are 丁 and 壬. The pairing 丁壬 in the system of Heavenly Stems is a combination 合 (dīng-rén hé), one of the best-known stem combinations. It is associated with strong attraction, which does not by itself guarantee a calm relationship.

Attention: this is specifically the hidden level. A stem combination is assessed from the full chart, taking into account the position of the characters in the pillars. So we do not claim that every Dog and Pig pair has a "combination"; we only note the potential: branches standing side by side carry inside characters capable of attracting each other. In a couple this sometimes shows as an inexplicable fondness that persists despite differences of character.

4 Love and marriage

For many Dogs, the Pig is a person beside whom you can breathe out. It does not check or grow jealous over trifles, and knows how to create comfort and to accept. For the Pig, the Dog is a dependable partner who can be relied on, especially in practical matters.

The points of tension are these. The Dog is suspicious and inclined to check; the Pig is trusting and may take offense at being checked. The Dog speaks directly, sometimes too directly, and the Pig hears it more deeply than intended. The Pig avoids conflict by postponing the difficult talk, while the Dog stores up what is unsaid and at some point delivers all of it at once.

What helps: an agreement about the form of difficult conversations. The Dog softens the wording ("I feel anxious when…" rather than "you again…"). The Pig does not escape the subject but speaks, even awkwardly: "I'm not ready now, let's do it this evening." Both admit that silence is also a way of quarreling.

Another point is shared life and money. The Dog leans toward saving and caution, the Pig toward generous spending on people. The division that works best is a joint savings fund with a clear rule, plus a personal budget for each, spent without reporting.

5 Friendship and family

In friendship the Dog and the Pig complement each other. The Dog gets you out of trouble (knows whom to call and what to do), the Pig feeds, listens and supports morally. If both have a shared cause, such as volunteering, renovating an old house or a hike, the friendship becomes very strong.

In a family where one parent is a Dog and the other a Pig, children get a balance: rules and warmth. The main thing is that the two do not turn into the "good" and the "bad" parent. Agree on rules together, so it doesn't happen that the Dog forbids while the Pig secretly permits.

6 Work and business

A business union suits fields where client trust and organization are needed: education, healthcare, hospitality, food production, real estate, consulting. The Dog handles structure and the legal side, the Pig handles relationships and service.

The weak spot: both avoid risky moves, the Dog out of caution, the Pig out of reluctance to quarrel with the market. You need a person or a procedure that pushes toward growth. 7 Undercurrents: what they teach each other

It is interesting to watch what a Dog and a Pig learn from each other in a mature couple. The Dog learns to let go: not everything must be held, not everything needs watching. Beside the Pig it notices that the world does not fall apart if the door is sometimes left unlocked. The Pig, in turn, learns to say "no" and to mark boundaries. Beside a Dog, who always knows where its own line runs, that is easier to learn.

This exchange does not happen for everyone, only for pairs in which both are ready to change. If each has taken a defensive position ("I am what I am"), Earth and Water simply begin to get in each other's way. Watch yourself: when did you last adopt from your partner a habit that originally seemed strange to you? If recently, the pair is alive.

A good test of this couple's maturity is a quarrel over nothing. If afterward the Dog explains that it was actually frightened, and the Pig explains that it was actually hurt, you have a common language. 8 Typical conflicts and how to defuse them

Limits and freedom. The Dog sets rules, the Pig feels pressure. The fix: rules both accept, and a list of "zones of freedom" for each.

Checks and trust. The Dog asks for details, the Pig takes offense. The fix: the Dog checks only what you agreed to check (money, documents) and extends credit of trust on the rest.

Unspoken hurt. The Pig stays silent, the Dog notices and worries. The fix: a short regular "how are you" conversation, with no search for the guilty.

Different tempos. The Dog is ready to act by plan, the Pig by mood. The fix: a frame of dates and budget plus freedom in the manner of carrying it out.

9 The pair in 2027: different conditions

2027 is the year 丁未 (dīng-wèi), the Fire Goat, beginning around February 4 with Start of Spring 立春. For the partners the year unfolds differently. The Dog 戌 meets the destruction 六破 戌未 and the punishment 三刑 丑戌未: pressure, a review of commitments, sharper themes of responsibility. The Pig 亥 enters the Three Harmony 三合 亥卯未, an incomplete Wood trio with the Goat: the general background is favorable, with possible new acquaintances and projects. For the pair this is an asymmetry. The Pig is in easier conditions and may become the support, while the Dog this year does well to allow itself to be supported. For a Dog used to carrying everything alone, this is not simple. For the Pig there is a risk of taking the partner's difficulties "too lightly", without noticing how tense the other is. March turns out lucky for both: the Dog has a harmony with 卯, the Pig has the full trio. April is tense for the Dog, May for the Pig. This order is well suited to mutual support: while one is having a hard time, the other is steady. It is background, not a calendar of events.

Another practical thought: in such pairs a "double check" of important decisions works well. The Dog looks at risks and obligations, the Pig at people and feelings. If both agree, the decision is probably sound. If you diverge, ask each other one question: "what worries you?" and "what do you like?" The answers to both together give a fuller picture than each alone.

Let us go through a few domestic scenes in which this pair will recognize itself.
